Helen Keller Services for the Blind is thrilled to announce we will be expanding our Children's Learning Center to two brand-new Long Island locations in Nassau and Suffolk County! These state-of-the-art facilities will serve preschool children who are blind or have low vision, as well as multiple disabilities, autism, Down syndrome, or pervasive developmental delays. This expansion reflects HKSB’s commitment to ensuring that Long Island families have access to the same high-quality early education and support services that have transformed lives at the CLC in Brooklyn. We are currently seeking a Full-Time Registered Nurse to join our Children Learning Center located in Islandia, NY

The School Nurse  is responsible for assuring the health and safety of approximately 60 special education preschoolers. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

• Assess students daily for illness, injury, and health concerns. Maintain daily student log in accordance with OCFS Licensure and NY State Guidance
• Provide care, including minor first aid and medication administration (as authorized).
• Follow NY State guidelines to determine when children not permitted in building due to illness in accordance with school policies and health guidelines.
• Monitor students with chronic health conditions and implement individualized health care plans.
• Review and assess all medical documentation of new and continuing students for completion and compliance with regulatory agencies of New York. 
• Manage treatments and medications for students, prescribed by medical professional’s prior written authorization and Rxs.
• Ensure all medical documentation complies with OCFS regulations and school policies.
• Monitor immunization records, physical examinations, medication authorizations, and other required health documentation.
• Maintain confidentiality of student health information in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.
• Will advise parents, School Principal, social worker or other appropriate health professionals when student might need a more specialized level of care.
• Gain an understanding through formal in-person assessment of each child and dialogue with student’s parents, building administrators and other medical professionals to determine appropriate classroom placement and need for health care supports. 
• Disseminate communication as needed related to OCFS/communicable diseases through the platform and email. 
• Maintain the New York State certification/licensure by remaining current with pediatric medical research via continuing education opportunities. 
• Expand her / his skills and knowledge to meet the growing needs of students who are now attending school with more complex and chronic health needs.
• Attend ongoing professional development workshops and seminars.
• Provide trainings to the Children’s Learning Center staff as needed. 
• Participate and contribute to monthly team meetings and all full staff meetings. 
• Maintain a professional demeanor at all times and contribute to the upkeep of their personal space and shared work space. 
• Collect, analyze and synthesize comprehensive data pertinent to the student’s health or the situation to ensure the highest quality of health and educational services.
• One time quarterly travel to other school facilities within the HKS - Children’s Learning Center network (internal audits). 

Performs all other duties as assigned by Principal or members of HKSB Administration.

REQUIRED EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

• Bachelors degree in Nursing (required)
• Strong technical skills including MS Office, Outlook, school related applications (required)
• Experience working in school setting, particularly given to OCFS experience (preferred)

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

• Valid and current NYS RN license (required)
