ABOUT THE ROLE

The Assistant Controller is a hands‑on accounting leader responsible for supporting the financial operations of Milestone Education's growing multi‑state portfolio of early childhood schools. Reporting directly to the Controller, this role helps oversee month‑end close, financial reporting, general ledger accounting, reconciliations, internal controls, and accounting process improvements. The ideal candidate combines strong technical accounting knowledge with a continuous improvement mindset. You'll work closely with Finance, FP&A, Operations, and executive leadership to ensure timely, accurate financial reporting while helping strengthen the accounting infrastructure that supports our continued growth.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

Execute and improve month-end and year-end close processes. Prepare consolidated and entity‑level financial statements in accordance with GAAP. Maintain the general ledger, including journal entries, accruals, fixed assets, and intercompany activity. Perform and review multi‑entity bank reconciliations and support cash flow reporting. Support revenue recognition and reconciliation of payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and enrollment data. Help develop and maintain strong internal controls, accounting policies, and financial processes. Assist with annual audits and coordinate supporting documentation with external auditors. Support multi‑state tax compliance, filings, and coordination with outside tax advisors. Partner with FP&A to provide accurate financial reporting and operational insights. Help optimize accounting systems, integrations, and automation efforts. Supervise assigned accounting staff and offshore accounting support. Partner with operational leaders to answer financial questions and identify opportunities for improvement.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required Minimum of 2 years of progressive accounting experience, including month‑end close and financial statement preparation Experience supporting multi‑site, multi‑state organizations required Strong understanding of GAAP and accounting internal controls Experience with consolidations across multiple entities Strong cash management and bank reconciliation experience Advanced Microsoft Excel skills Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills Experience with Sage or comparable ERP systems preferred Public accounting experience is a plus
