Underwater Robotic Technician The School of Environmental and Biological Sciences at Rutgers University, located on the Cook Campus, is seeking a part‑time Underwater Robotic Technician to assist the RUCOOL team with operations for underwater autonomous robots. The role will work on research vessels and in laboratories, leading deployment and recovery teams for Slocum gliders, collecting water samples, operating underwater autonomous robots, and coordinating with shore teams. Primary Responsibilities Assist on research vessels (R'Vs) and laboratories with underwater glider deployments and recoveries; lead deployment or recovery team for Slocum gliders. Obtain water samples, deploy/recall underwater autonomous robots, drive the vehicle, and coordinate with shore personnel. Required Qualifications High‑school or vocational‑school education or equivalent experience. Knowledge of underwater and Slocum gliders; how to maneuver, handle, deploy, recover, and communicate with them. Effective communication via e‑mail, cell, and satellite phone. Ability to operate comfortably on vessels and travel 2–4 hours by vehicle. Physical ability to lift 50 lbs. with assistance and flexibility to work during good weather opportunities. Preferred Qualifications Prior training on underwater gliders and operating on a vessel at sea (e.g., Glider Technician Camp). Experience taking water samples, using a sampling rosette, and performing sampling net tows. Equipment Utilized PC computers. Seabird sampling software. Teledyne Slocum glider. Water sampling rosette. Physical Demands and Work Environment Comfortable operation on vessels. Potentially longer days at sea, 4–8 hours. Travel 2–4 hours per day via vehicle. Lift 50 lbs. with assistance. Availability to work during favorable weather opportunities. Compensation and Benefits Hourly Wage : $19–$22 per hour (nonexempt).
