Police Officer - Lateral or Academy Graduate

Additional Salary under POST Certification Pay 5% for Basic 14% for Intermediate 22.5% for Advanced Job Summary Under general supervision, to perform a variety of duties involved in the enforcement of laws and the prevention of crimes; to conduct and participate in general investigations; to control traffic flow and enforce state and local traffic regulations; to perform technical and administrative tasks in support of the Department. Exercises no supervision. Responsibilities Patrol a designated area of the City to preserve law and order; discover and prevent crimes and check property for physical security; apprehend and arrest offenders. Respond to general public service calls and complaints including domestic disturbances, civil complaints, property control, automobile accidents, robberies, and related misdemeanor and felony incidents. Investigate crimes and suspicious circumstances. Collect, process, photograph and present evidence including fingerprints, fibers, blood, and related physical evidence. Identify and interview suspects, victims, complainants and witnesses. Perform drunk driving and commercial vehicle checkpoints. Testify and present evidence in court. Contact and cooperate with other law enforcement agencies in matters relating to the apprehension of offenders and the investigation of offenses. Maintain contact with citizens regarding potential law enforcement problems and preserve good relationships with the general public. Take an active role in areas of public education related to crime and crime prevention. Takes custody of lost and found property. Prepare reports on criminal or civil matters. Assist in the custody, care, transportation, and welfare of prisoners. Provide information and directions to the public. Promote community policing, explain laws, ordinances, and citizens’ rights in resolving disputes. Attend community meetings and participate in community-based programs. Participate in training courses and programs. Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned. Lateral Requirements – Experience Currently employed as a sworn peace officer as defined by California Penal Code sections 830.1(a) and 830.2(a) by a California law enforcement agency. Or previous employment as a sworn peace officer as defined by California Penal Code sections 830.1(a) and 830.2(a) by a California law enforcement agency and possession of a Regular Basic Academy Course and a valid POST Basic Certificate. Lateral Requirements – Education High school diploma or equivalent. Some college work is desirable. Academy Graduate – Experience Completion of a California POST basic training Academy. One year of experience working with the public is desirable. Academy Graduate – Education High school diploma or equivalent. Some college work is desirable. General Requirements – Licenses and Certificates Possession of valid Class C driver license and acceptable driving record. If currently employed police officers: possession of Regular Basic Academy Course. If previously employed police officers: possession of Regular Basic Academy Course and a valid POST Basic Certificate. Special Requirements Weight in proportion to height as determined by examining physician. Uncorrected vision of at least 20/80 each eye, corrected to 20/20 with glasses or contact lenses and free from color blindness. Essential Functions and Duties – Physical Abilities Ability to travel to different sites and locations. Regularly required to talk or hear; required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms. Occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. Ability to sit, stand, walk, run, kneel, crouch, stoop, squat, crawl, twist, climb, and lift up to 50 lb. Endure exposure to heat, noise, outdoors, vibration, confining work space, chemicals, explosive materials, mechanical hazards, and electrical hazards. Available for shift work, on‑call, and stand‑by.
