Job Description
This position is dual certification and is open to both internal and external candidates. Substitute positions are on call / as needed. Hours: On call, 8 hours/day (Monday-Friday split shift - 6:00A-8:30A, 10:30A-4:30P). Eligibility lists: One list will be created from open competitive and promotional candidates. Basic function: Under the direction of the Director of Facilities, Development, and Transportation and/or an assigned lead, operate a school bus, transport students, and perform daily safety inspection of bus equipment. Distinguishing characteristics: The classification of Bus Driver is distinguished from the Lead Bus Driver classification in that the latter provides training to new and current Bus Drivers, assigns and reviews work, manages overtime rotation schedule, and performs other various lead duties.
Job Responsibilities
Operate a school bus over designated routes in accordance with specified time schedules and in accordance with regulations and laws related to pupil transportation. Maintain order and discipline among students on bus following District policies and procedures regarding discipline of students and contact with school officials, parents and the public; interact with parents regarding questions and concerns. Pick up and discharge students at established bus stops; stop traffic and escort students across streets and roadways as needed to assure student safety; report incidents which affect the safety of students. Maintain the bus in a safe operating condition through prescribed daily vehicle inspections; check and maintain fuel, oil and water levels, brakes, brake lights and doors; report mechanical defects and malfunctions to appropriate personnel. Perform scheduled maintenance on bus and assist other assigned personnel with inspections as needed. Transport students with physical and mental disabilities to and from designated locations; lift and secure wheel chairs; assist in loading and unloading students with disabilities. Fuel and clean exterior and interior of buses including picking up debris, sweeping and mopping floor, wiping upholstery and cleaning headlights. Maintain records concerning vehicle maintenance, miles driven and number of children transported and other related matters; prepare student conduct, incident and accident reports. Utilize two-way radio for bus to bus and bus to base communication. Perform first aid according to established guidelines and procedures. Perform related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Education: Any combination, which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties and functions, listed above. Experience: One (1) year of experience in the operation of a motor vehicle. Licenses and Certifications: A valid California commercial driver's license, class A or class B, with Passenger, School Bus and Air Brake endorsements. Must be a Type 1 Transit Driver. A valid Special School Bus Driver's Certificate. A valid Medical Examiner Certificate approved by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Valid Pediatric First Aid and CPR certificates. First Aid and CPR certificates are required within the first 30 days of original hire date and must be maintained during employment. Maintain insurability by the District's insurance carrier for liability purposes and provide proof of certifications to the Human Resources Services. This classification is designated safety-sensitive, requires a pre-employment drug test, and is subject to random DOT drug tests. Applicants must provide the Personnel Commission Office with a copy of their current ten-year driving record, obtainable from any office of the California Department of Motor Vehicles, at the time of application.
Working Conditions
Work Environment: Work is performed in an indoor and outdoor environment; subject to driving a standard/automatic bus, traffic and adverse weather conditions, and working evening and variable hours. Physical Requirements: Employees must be physically able to perform the essential duties of a position with or without reasonable accommodation and without hazard to themselves or others.

Screening Process: Applications will be screened to select the most qualified candidates. The screening process for this position, which may be subject to modification, will include some form of a(n): application screening, initial qualifications screening, documentation/certification screening, and supplemental application screening. Examination Process: The examination plan will consist of: a. Written Exam (100% of final score) - June 2, 2026. Visit our Recruitment Calendar for more details. Examination dates may change or be canceled without advance notice. The examination may consist of any combination of a(n): training and experience (T&E) evaluation, written knowledge test, structured panel interview, situational judgement interview, or other type of exam of fitness for duty. All parts of the examination process are job related. A passing score must be attained on each portion of the exam to advance to the next stage and ultimate placement on an eligibility list.

Exam Protests: Protest of any part of the exam process must be in writing and submitted to the Personnel Director no later than five (5) working days from the date you participated in the exam. Any protest must include rationale to support the protest and shall include supporting documentation or references. Protests must be based on illegal discrimination, abuse of discretion, or procedure/process error. Protests should NOT be based on receiving unexpected results. We cannot be responsible for lost mail, misdirected mail, or failure of mail to be delivered after it has been entrusted to the U.S. Postal Service.
Establishment of Eligibility: Candidates who are successful in all screening and testing stages will be placed on an eligibility list. Typically, an eligibility list for a classification expires after one (1) year. Candidates on the expired eligibility list are no longer considered for positions within the class. Eligibility lists may be extended beyond one year or expire sooner than one year. Eligibility lists may be merged, in which case candidate ranks may change.
Selection Process: Candidates on the eligibility list will be called in rank order to participate in final selection interviews with the hiring manager until three ranks of candidates have accepted the invitation to interview. Ranks may include ties so more than three candidates may be called to interview for one vacancy. Please note that candidates will be removed from the eligibility list for declining the invitation to interview more than three (3) times.
Offers of Employment: Official offers of employment are ONLY made by the Bassett Unified School District Personnel Commission office. Offers are subject to satisfactory completion of ALL the pre-employment processing including: successful completion of a drug test, tuberculosis examination, fingerprint clearance by the California Department of Justice, and proof of eligibility to work in the United States.
Advanced Step Placement: All new regular classified employees shall be paid in accordance with the salary range established for the class to which assigned. Initial placement will normally be the first step of the salary range. However, a new employee may receive advanced step placement with an approval from the Personnel Commission. Requests for advanced step must be submitted in writing to the Personnel Commission office before the employee's first day of work.
Approval will be based on the following criteria:
- Additional qualifying experience beyond that required for entry into the class.
- Additional education at the college level when related to the position, beyond the established educational requirements for entry into the class.
- Evidence of currently receiving a salary greater than the first step of the salary for the classification.
