Overview Barnes‑Jewish Hospital at Washington University Medical Center is the largest hospital in Missouri and one of the nation’s top hospitals. The 4900 General Surgery floor provides care for a wide variety of procedures, including bariatric, plastic reconstruction, orthopedics, and ophthalmology. The team is supported by full‑time academic faculty, community physicians, residents, interns, and fellows. Role Purpose Provides direct patient care to support licensed professional nurses on a team, ensuring a safe environment for patients, collecting vital information, and reporting changes to the nursing team. Responsibilities Implements direct patient care under the supervision of a nurse, promoting patient and family centered care in a healing environment. Assists patients with activities of daily living (ADLs), performs vital signs, intake & output, fall and pressure ulcer prevention measures, urinary catheter care, phlebotomy, and point‑of‑care testing. Collects clinical data and reports changes in patient status to the nurse. Assists nurses with patient and family education and documents all patient care activities with correct medical terminology. Acts as a 1:1 patient safety sitter as necessary. Ensures availability of supplies and equipment to meet each patient’s needs. Participates in activities that promote patient safety, quality, and regulatory compliance, and engages in professional development.
