New Position: Room Temperature Rack Technician / Engineer

Role Summary

We are seeking a hands-on Room Temp Rack technician or engineer to support electronics rack assembly, instrumentation integration, RF hardware installation, networking setup, and lab operations for quantum hardware test environments. This role focuses on building and maintaining clean, repeatable room-temperature rack configurations, supporting instrument bring-up and debug, and collaborating closely with electrical, RF, controls, software, and lab operations teams.

Key Responsibilities

Room Temp Rack Integration

• Assemble, cable, label, and maintain room-temperature electronics racks used for laboratory instrumentation, control, readout, and test infrastructure.

• Install and configure rack-mounted instruments, power distribution, RF hardware, cabling, patch panels, network-connected equipment, and supporting peripherals according to documented procedures.

• Maintain neat, serviceable, and aesthetically consistent rack layouts with strong attention to cable management, labeling, routing, accessibility, and configuration control.

Lab Operations

• Operate lab tools and equipment in accordance with ESD, safety, and basic electronics lab best practices.

• Maintain clean, organized lab workspaces and support day-to-day execution in both research and corporate lab settings.

• Lift 40 lbs for more than 1 minute, work in moderately tight spaces approximately 1 meter deep for more than 5 minutes, and operate at heights upwards of 8 feet off the ground for extended periods when required.

• Support travel-based rack installation, upgrade, maintenance, or lab bring-up activities as needed.

Debug & Collaboration

• Support rack bring-up and first-line debug for instrumentation, RF signal paths, control hardware, networked equipment, and software-controlled measurement setups.

• Apply familiarity with DHCP and networking best practices to assist with network configuration, connectivity checks, addressing issues, and escalation of instrumentation network problems.

• Use Python 3.x scripts, tools, and custom libraries to support instrument control, configuration checks, automation, data collection, and troubleshooting.

• Capture photos, rack layouts, cable maps, configuration notes, software versions, network settings, and observations to support engineering review and future procedure improvements.

• Work closely with internal engineers while owning day-to-day rack execution, documentation, and follow-through.

Skills & Experience Required

Hands-On Lab & Electronics Experience

• Familiarity with basic electronics, ESD-safe handling, and laboratory best practices.

• Comfort working with rack-mounted equipment, instrumentation cabling, power distribution, labeling, and physical lab setup.

• Ability to follow, redline, and improve written procedures while preserving configuration control and engineering intent.

• Ability to lift 40 lbs for more than 1 minute and work in moderately tight spaces approximately 1 meter deep for more than 5 minutes.

• Interest in travel to support rack installation, upgrade, maintenance, or lab bring-up activities.

Networking & Software Background

• Familiarity with DHCP and networking best practices for laboratory and instrumentation environments.

• More than 2 years of experience with Python 3.x.

• Ability to support networked instrumentation setup, basic connectivity debug, and software-assisted configuration checks under engineering guidance.

Nice to Have

• Experience in both corporate and research laboratory settings.

• At least 1 year of experience in an electronics laboratory setting.

• Familiarity with RF hardware, RF cabling, and relevant RF standards or lab practices.

• Strong attentiveness to neatness, detail, aesthetics, cable routing, and visual consistency in rack builds.

• Familiarity with different methods of amplification, including lock-in amplifiers, traveling-wave parametric amplifiers, and related measurement-chain hardware.

• Experience with network configuration and debugging, especially for laboratory instrumentation or network-connected test equipment.

• More than 1 year of experience using Python in a physics laboratory environment.

• Experience with Pythonic object-oriented programming, custom libraries, reusable tooling, and contemporary coding practices.

• Bachelor's degree in Physics with at least two relevant lab courses; Electrical Engineering with at least two physics courses; or Mechanical Engineering with at least two physics courses.

• Ability to operate at heights upwards of 8 feet off the ground for long periods of time.
