Summary of Purpose Duties and Responsibilities of OCC DHY Supervising Dentist
The general responsibility for this position is to oversee and supervise dental hygiene students during their daily clinical activities when interacting with their patients and providing treatment.
Typical Duties Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide comprehensive dental care and treatment to patients in accordance with established protocols and best practices.
- Collaborate with dental hygiene students to deliver hands-on learning experiences, supervising and guiding them during clinical procedures.
- Oversee and examine hygiene patients for clinical signs and symptoms of oral pathology, dental caries, and periodontal disease, providing a dental diagnosis.
- Conduct dental examinations, develop treatment plans, and recommend referrals as necessary.
- Educate students and patients on oral health, preventive care, and treatment options.
- Maintain accurate and complete patient records in compliance with regulatory standards.
- Approve and order dental radiographs and approve re-takes when necessary.
- Provide American Academy of Periodontology periodontal classification for each patient treated.
- Deliver individual recommendations for students regarding patient management and clinical findings.
- Instruct and grade students on their ability to perform dental procedures, such as the application of dental sealants, radiographic surveys, intra-oral imaging, caries detection and more.
- Provide local anesthesia and prescribe necessary medications as evaluated.
- Participate in clinic evaluations and contribute to quality improvement initiatives.
- Foster a positive and educational environment for students, encouraging their professional growth and development.
- Attend faculty meetings, contribute to curriculum development and assist with administrative duties as determined by the Program Coordinators.
- Provide clinical remediation and tutoring to dental hygiene students as needed.
- Participate in patient case study evaluations.
Minimum Education and Experience Required Education: Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD).
Required Work Experience: Recent clinical experience.
Required Licenses and Certifications:
- Maintain a current State of Michigan dental license and malpractice insurance
- Must have a Michigan Board of Pharmacy Controlled Substance license
- Must have a current CPR Healthcare Provider Certification
