Job Title: Machinist Job Description

The Machinist fabricates, repairs, modifies, and maintains replacement wear parts and machine components used in high-volume paper product manufacturing equipment. This role requires strong CNC and conventional machining skills, machine programming expertise, precise blueprint reading, and accurate use of precision measuring tools while following Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP). The Machinist produces high-quality components with tight tolerances to reduce equipment downtime and support continuous, reliable production operations.

Responsibilities
  • Program, set up, and operate CNC mills, lathes, and other machine tools to produce precision components.
  • Operate conventional and manual machining equipment, including mills, lathes, grinders, and drill presses.
  • Fabricate replacement wear parts and custom machine components from engineering drawings, sketches, or sample parts.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, schematics, and CAD-generated designs to determine machining requirements.
  • Measure and inspect finished parts using precision measuring instruments such as calipers, micrometers, dial indicators, bore gauges, and height gauges.
  • Maintain dimensional accuracy to specified tolerances, including measurements to 1/16 inch and finer as required.
  • Troubleshoot and modify parts to improve machine reliability, performance, and production efficiency.
  • Assist maintenance teams during equipment breakdowns and scheduled shutdowns by fabricating and adjusting parts as needed.
  • Recommend design improvements and material selections for wear components to enhance durability and performance.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on machine shop equipment to ensure safe, reliable operation.
  • Maintain accurate records of machine programs, repairs, and fabricated components for traceability and future reference.
  • Follow all plant safety regulations, GMP standards, quality requirements, and housekeeping expectations to maintain a safe and organized work area.
Essential Skills
  • Technical school certification, apprenticeship, or equivalent machinist experience.
  • Minimum 3–5 years of machining experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Hands-on experience programming and operating CNC equipment, including CNC mills and lathes.
  • Proficiency with G-code and CNC programming software.
  • Strong blueprint reading skills and mechanical aptitude.
  • Ability to use precision measuring tools such as calipers, micrometers, dial indicators, bore gauges, and height gauges.
  • Ability to perform detailed inspections and maintain tight dimensional tolerances.
  • Knowledge of metal properties and machining techniques for various materials.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and manage priorities effectively.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills related to machining and part performance.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience in paper, packaging, tissue, or consumer products manufacturing environments.
  • Familiarity with CAD/CAM software for part design and toolpath generation.
  • Welding and fabrication experience to support custom part and fixture creation.
  • Experience machining stainless steel, aluminum, plastics, and specialty materials.
  • Knowledge of Total Productive Maintenance (TPM), Lean Manufacturing, and Continuous Improvement principles.
  • Experience with machining centers and tooling brands such as Daewoo, Accupro, Mori, and similar equipment.

Work Environment

This is a full-time, on-site role in a high-volume manufacturing facility. The standard schedule is Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with an additional 5–10 hours of overtime per week as needed to support production demands. The work takes place in a machine shop environment around moving mechanical equipment, using CNC and manual mills, lathes, grinders, drill presses, and related tools. The work area is not climate controlled and can become hot during the summer months. The role requires frequent standing, walking, bending, and reaching, as well as the ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Proper personal protective equipment is required, including safety glasses, hearing protection, and steel-toed footwear.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $36.00/hr.
