It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters! Description of Work The North Carolina Department of Adult Correction is seeking dedicated individuals to join our team as Correctional Food Service Officers (CFSO). Employees in this position play a vital role in ensuring safe, efficient, and compliant meal preparation and delivery for the offender population while maintaining security and sanitation standards. Correctional Food Service Officer Responsibilities: Supervise and instruct offenders in food preparation, serving, and cleanup activities according to established menus and schedules. Inspect food items and supplies for quality and quantity; report shortages or discrepancies promptly. Complete required documentation, including production records, temperature logs, and inventory reports. Coordinate timely meal service and distribution to designated housing units. Assist with ordering, receiving, and storing food and supplies in compliance with inventory control procedures. Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences To be considered for a Correctional Food Service Officer position, ALL applicants must: Meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements (12 NCAC 09G .0302) Pass a criminal background check Produce a negative drug screening result Successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations Possess a valid driver’s license Hires may be eligible for a $3,000 Sign on Bonus. Correctional Food Service Officer I: Minimum – Offenders at these facilities require a minimum amount of oversight, they are permitted to enter/exit cells without permission during certain times of the day. Salary Range: $33,902 -$59,327 Salary Grade: NC05 Work Schedules Employees must be able to work any shift including rotating, fixed shift, or split shift. All shifts may include days, nights, weekends, holidays, and mandatory overtime as required. Trainee Progression Candidate Consideration If fully qualified applicants are unavailable, candidates may be considered for trainee appointments. Trainee salaries may begin below the posted range and increase as minimum qualifications are obtained in accordance with State policy. Basic Correctional Food Service Officer Training (BCOT) All new hires must complete six weeks of Basic Correctional food service officer Training (BCOT). This entails a required overnight weekday stay at training facility. Room and board is provided. Transportation is available upon request.
