About the Role:

The Certified Surgical Technician – Maternity Unit provides primarily direct patient care within the Maternity Unit, with additional responsibilities supporting Cesarean-section (C-section) procedures. This position works closely with nurses, providers, and the multidisciplinary care team to provide safe, efficient, and compassionate care to maternity patients.

The majority of this role involves direct patient care and clinical support on the Maternity Unit , with responsibilities that may include assisting with patient care, maintaining a safe patient environment, supporting unit workflow, and assisting the nursing team as needed. The Surgical Technician will also participate in C-section cases by preparing the operating room, ensuring instruments and supplies are available and sterile, assisting the surgical team during procedures, and completing appropriate post-procedure cleanup and equipment processing.

The ideal candidate must have a minimum of two (2) years of current, recent Surgical Technician/Scrub Tech experience and demonstrate proficiency in surgical aseptic technique, instrumentation, and operating-room procedures. Current scrub-tech experience is required due to the need to safely and effectively support C-section procedures.

This position requires the ability to transition between direct patient care responsibilities on the Maternity Unit and surgical support for C-section cases while maintaining high standards of patient safety, teamwork, professionalism, and quality of care.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Certification as a Surgical Technologist (CST) from an accredited program.
• Completion of a formal surgical technology training program.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Demonstrated knowledge of sterile techniques and surgical instrumentation.
• Legal authorization to work in the United States.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience working in a hospital or surgical center environment.
• Familiarity with electronic medical records (EMR) systems.
• Strong communication and teamwork skills developed through clinical experience.

Responsibilities:

• Prepare operating rooms by setting up surgical instruments, equipment, and sterile drapes according to the specific procedure requirements.
• Assist surgical teams during operations by passing instruments and supplies, anticipating the needs of surgeons, and maintaining a sterile field.
• Ensure all surgical instruments and equipment are properly sterilized and maintained before and after procedures.
• Monitor and manage surgical supplies inventory to ensure availability and proper storage.
• Adhere to infection control protocols and safety standards to protect patients and staff.
• Document surgical procedures and maintain accurate records of instrument usage and sterilization processes.
• Collaborate with healthcare team members to provide high-quality patient care and support.

Their technical skills enable them to anticipate the needs of surgeons and provide timely assistance during operations, which requires quick thinking and precision. Effective communication and teamwork skills are essential as they coordinate with surgeons, nurses, and other staff to facilitate smooth surgical workflows. Familiarity with sterilization processes and equipment maintenance ensures that all tools are safe and functional for each procedure. Additionally, organizational skills help manage surgical supplies and documentation, supporting compliance with healthcare regulations and standards.
