Position Details Position Classification Title : Police Officer FLSA : Non-Exempt Position Class : Position Overview Position Summary Note: WSSU campus police is awarding a minimum bonus of $5,000 to attract highly effective law enforcement professionals. This bonus will be awarded after individuals complete the field training officer program, including all certification requirements set forth by the North Carolina Training and Standards. Additionally, a second bonus of up to $3,500 may be awarded at the end of year two. This position performs law enforcement work at a university campus or other State facility. With full powers of arrest, officers enforce the laws of the State and the United States Government. Duties include patrolling an assigned area to respond to complaints or calls, enforcing state laws and regulations, apprehending violators, investigating violations or complaints, collecting and preserving evidence, testifying in court, and performing related work. At least probationary certification from the NC CJETSC as a commissioned police officer and successful completion of the appointing agency’s designated field training program for newly appointed Campus Police Officers. Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education : Demonstrated competencies in general patrol duties (emergency response, medical, traffic, and service); effective investigations; understanding of crime prevention and community policing in a university environment; ability to use and maintain law enforcement equipment. Completion of Basic Law Enforcement Training or an equivalent certification to NC Training and Standards Commission. Experience-based progression options: various Police Officer II/III and Master Police Officer levels based on years of sworn law enforcement experience, including equivalent outside agency experience. Licenses and Certifications Required License or Certification : Certification as a law enforcement officer per the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission. In-state transfers must be certified in NC or eligible for the 96-hour program, including passing the state exam. Out-of-state candidates must complete 96 hours of training and pass the state exam.
