Director of Development

What We Can Achieve Together The preferred location for this position is Phoenix, Arizona. The Director of Development will direct all aspects of one or more development functions to secure significant financial resources supporting conservation goals in Arizona, and in the Western United States and Canada Division. This may include chapter development, individual giving, planned giving, foundation relations, and corporate giving programs. Key responsibilities include: designing and managing strategic plans; establishing benchmarks and success metrics; leading a collaborative effort to maximize fundraising success; spearheading strategic dialogues with stakeholders; and managing relations with donors, vendors, and volunteers. The Director will also present analysis and recommendations to the Board of Trustees’ committees and serve as a member of the Arizona Chapter Leadership Team, overseeing a staff of 8‑11 employees. Responsibilities & Scope Accountable for overall fundraising goals of $8‑11 million a year. Manage a development department of 8‑11 staff, including recruitment, professional development, and performance management. Design and direct complex projects, coordinate professionals, manage budgets, and ensure program accountability. Administer a $2‑million department budget and pursue corrective strategies as necessary. Lead negotiations for complex, high‑profile agreements and direct future campaigns, including feasibility studies and donor pipelines. Engage with a 21‑member Board of Trustees and ensure compliance with TNC policies and legal requirements. Travel up to 20% of the time, primarily within Arizona; some travel within the U.S. and occasional long hours and weekend work. We’re Looking For You We seek a leader who can direct all aspects of development functions with a track record of supervising multidisciplinary teams and closing major gifts. What You’ll Bring Bachelor’s degree and 8 years of related experience, including senior‑level experience. Experience cultivating, soliciting, and closing major gifts. Experience building and maintaining long‑term relationships with donors, foundations, and corporations. Experience managing budgeting responsibilities. Experience supervising a multidisciplinary team. Experience in a large, complex nonprofit environment. Knowledge of fundraising principles, practices, and procedures. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, web browsers, and a CRP database. Desired Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in a related field and 10+ years of fundraising experience at a high level. Track record of closing 6‑7 figure gifts. Extensive management experience, able to motivate, coach, and set objectives for a large, multidisciplinary team. Experience working closely with nonprofit boards, including recruitment and onboarding. Expert knowledge of major gifts and capital campaign trends. Ability to synthesize complex information into actionable frameworks. Strong communication and presentation skills. Working knowledge of charitable gift planning concepts. Advanced understanding of best practices in fundraising and nonprofit management. Multilingual skills and cross‑cultural experience appreciated. Scientific background and large institutional experience helpful. Proficiency in synthesizing materials from multiple sources into a coherent summary. Salary Information The starting pay range for this position is generally $157,000–$180,000 for candidates located in the USA. Pay within the range will be based on factors including qualifications and experience. Countries outside the USA will have a different pay range based on local market conditions.
