Title Assistant Attorney General, Correctional Litigation Unit Agency Attorney General & Department of Law Location Office of the Attorney General – offices in Richmond, Abingdon, Fairfax, or Virginia Beach; some overnight travel required. Overview The Correctional Litigation Section of the Attorney General’s Office seeks an attorney to represent and advise the Virginia Department of Corrections, Department of Juvenile Justice, and Parole Board. The role involves litigating state and federal cases concerning alleged violations of inmates’ constitutional rights, including freedom of speech, religious freedoms, excessive force, and due process, as well as claims under the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Virginia Tort Claims Act. Responsibilities Litigate cases in state and federal courts on inmates’ constitutional rights and related claims. Provide appellate work on cases appealed after trial court disposition. Advise client agencies on emerging legal issues and ancillary matters such as subpoenas and FOIA requests. Perform additional duties as necessary or appropriate. Report to the Section Chief and collaborate with a dynamic team. Minimum Qualifications Admission to the Virginia State Bar. Exceptional written and verbal communication skills. Proficient time management and ability to work well under pressure without close supervision. Willingness to assist and supervise others. Creative thinking and common-sense application. Flexibility to work independently and as a team member.
