Project Assistant (Intern)

Statement of Duties The Somerville City Council Research Assistant provides comprehensive support to Councilors covering administration, constituent services, policy analysis and research, data analysis, and communications. The role includes assistance to committees established under the City Council and involves liaison with constituents and City staff. Essential Functions Administrative support and research for various committees. Coordinate with Councilors to ensure consistent messaging and timely outreach to constituents and city staff. Conduct research on policy issues, ordinances, and initiatives to aid informed decision‑making. Synthesize data and document findings to inform recommendations. Provide general administrative support, including data entry, document management, and scheduling. Engage in learning opportunities to deepen understanding of local government operations, legislative processes, and public policy. Minimum Qualifications Currently enrolled in a graduate program in Public Administration, Public Policy, or a related area; a bachelor’s degree with 1‑3 years of related work experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to effectively perform the essential functions. Must possess excellent note‑taking, writing, and documentation skills. Special Requirements The employee is prohibited from taking public positions on issues that are or may reasonably come before the City Council. Knowledge, Abilities and Skills Strong problem‑solving and critical‑thinking abilities. Ability and willingness to learn technical and other skills quickly. Understanding of legal, legislative, and policy research methods. Ability to work independently and take ownership of projects over time. Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, tailored to various audiences. Work Environment The workplace involves everyday office discomforts, occasional exposure to outside elements, and visits to offices across the city. The position may require work in storage areas without typical office conditions and may involve travel across the city. Physical and Mental Requirements The role requires lifting moderately heavy objects (~25 lbs), stacking, and pushing and pulling them on carts. Motor tasks include moving objects, operating a telephone system, computer, and/or office equipment, typing, file sorting, and use of office equipment. Visual tasks involve routinely reading documents for general understanding and analytical purposes. Hours Part‑time with occasional evening commitments; 15‑19 hours per week. Salary $21.00 per hour; not benefits eligible. Exempt Status Non‑exempt. Date May 4th, 2026.
