CONTINGENT UPON CONTRACT AWARD. This position depends on a contract Federal Contracting Services, LLC (FCS) is competing for and will be filled only if FCS receives the award.

Location: Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, Bethesda, MD (Full-time, on-site)

Salary: $85,000 – $100,000/year

Anticipated start: 1 Dec 2026

Role Description

• Manage the end-to-end editorial lifecycle for public-facing materials (articles, reports, web content, leadership messaging), including a comprehensive editorial calendar and multi-stage review tracking.
• Review, edit and proofread all content for clarity, accuracy, grammar and strict compliance with Associated Press (AP) Style, the command style guide and Department of War (DoW) regulations.
• Fact-check and verify every claim, statistic and piece of medical information with subject matter experts across clinical and administrative departments.
• Serve as the central point of contact for the review process, coordinating feedback between authors, subject matter experts (SMEs), legal counsel and public affairs leadership.
• Lead the development, maintenance and enforcement of the organizational style guide.
• Manage the final clearance process, packaging finalized documents for the senior Public Affairs Officer's approval before release.

Require Qualification

• Bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism, English or a related field.
• 5+ years of demonstrable experience in professional editing, copyediting or technical writing.
• An exceptional and demonstrable command of English grammar, punctuation and AP Style.
• Proven experience in healthcare communications, military public affairs, or a similar regulated, high-visibility environment.
• A thorough understanding of Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and the safeguarding of Protected Health Information (PHI), and the ability to apply those principles rigorously.
• Project management experience, specifically managing an editorial calendar and multi-author publications.
• Meticulous attention to detail and an unwavering ethical commitment to accuracy and source verification.

Preferred Qualification

• Direct experience reviewing medical research, public policy or military doctrine.

You Must Be Able To

• Obtain and keep a Common Access Card (CAC) and a favorably adjudicated Tier 2 (non-critical sensitive) background investigation.
• Sign a Defense Health Agency (DHA) Non-Disclosure Agreement (DHA Form 49) no later than the first day of employment, renewed each option year.
• Complete DHA onboarding, mandatory Department of War (DoW) and DHA training, and HIPAA privacy and security training within the first 30 days.
• Meet DHA health and immunization requirements.
• Work on site at Walter Reed (8901 Rockville Pike, Bethesda, MD), Monday through Friday except federal holidays; support contingency activations or exercises outside normal duty hours when required.

Additional FCS Requirements

• Submit two editing samples with your application.
• Complete a timed AP Style editing exercise during screening.
