Overview The Critical Care Transport Paramedic provides patient and family centered care in accordance with State of Connecticut licensure, Connecticut Children’s Transport Guidelines or protocols, hospital policies, under the supervision of the Critical Care Transport Leadership and Medical Control Physician. Serves as a member of an interdisciplinary, self-managed work team using a holistic, caring approach to patient care. Reports to the Manager of Critical Care Transport. Responsibilities Performs a detailed assessment and communicates effectively within multidisciplinary team and Medical Control Physician. Care, communications and documentation meet hospital policy and competencies. 5% Provide basic and advanced airway management skills up to and including Rapid Sequence Intubation (RSI). 4% Performs emergency surgical airways. 4% Establish and maintain intravenous, interosseous (IO), and central line access. 5% Monitors and manages invasive lines and devices including A-Lines and EVD’s. 5% Maintains interpersonal communications within the multidisciplinary team in order to provide patient care during transportation. Teams could include RRT, Providers, RN’s, etc. 5% Administration, management and documentation of medications. 10% Run Point of Care Testing (POCT), including I-Stat labs, other patient care labs and accurately and timely document values. 5% Able to follow standards of care from Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS). 5% Care and documentation for patients on invasive and non-invasive forms of ventilation. 5% Perform ultrasound guided intravenous IV placement. 5% Timely and accurate documentation of patient care during transport. 5% Communication and education to patients and families. 5% Follows medical instructions promptly and accurately to the extent possible, within scope, on Critical Care Transport. 10% Maintains standards of documentation documents for clinical care, communications and education within appropriate timeframe for transport. 5% Establishes effective relationships with patients, families, staff and external customers/ consultants to the team. 5% Accountable for departmental and hospital quality and safety initiatives and goals. 5% Regularly attend transport team meetings and educational simulations. 5% Performs other regular duties as assigned. 2% Qualifications Education and/or Experience Required Education: High School diploma or GED required Graduated from an accredited paramedic program Experience: 2 year paramedic experience in a 911 system. Education and/or Experience Preferred Bachelor’s degree in related field Prior critical care transport experience Experience with pediatric critical care License and/or Certification Required CPR – Basic Life Support (BLS) - American Heart Association. Required upon hire and must be maintained current at all times. Current EMT-P Licensure, Connecticut, required. Neonatal Resuscitation (NRP) within 6 months of hire. Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) within 6 months of hire. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) within 6 months of hire. Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support Certified (PHTLS). Certification in Neonatal Pediatric Transport (C-NPT) within 2 years of hire. License and/or Certification Preferred Flight Paramedic (FP-C) Or Critical Care Paramedic (CCP-C) strongly preferred. Certified Neonatal Pediatric Transport (C-NPT). Nationally Registered Paramedic (NREMTP). Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge Basic Medical terminology, mathematics and measurements. Basic understanding of organizations environment of care and infection control policies and procedures. Basic understanding of reasons for and techniques for managing aggressive behavior. Understand and follow Connecticut Children’s policies and procedures. Demonstrates knowledge of the population-specific differences and needs of patients in appropriate, specific populations from neonate through adolescence and applies them to practice. Demonstrates cultural sensitivity in all interactions with patients/families and co-workers. Skills Excellent interpersonal skills and communication required. Demonstration of effective listening skills. Effective oral and written communication skills required. Ability to communicate in English is required (bilingual competency, Spanish preferred). Demonstrates competency in standard clinical procedures as well as unit specific patient management protocols. Abilities Maintain quality, safety and infection control standards. Learn and follow established protocols to respond in emergency situations. Learn and demonstrate competency in basic data entry, use of collaborative care and safety plans and documentation in the medical record.
