AMA | Accredited Medical Assistant - Bariatric Clinic

General Summary

The Medical Assistant operates within their scope to assist licensed nurses, physicians, and advanced practice providers. This role demands strong organizational skills, professionalism, excellent customer service, attention to detail, multitasking ability, critical thinking, and adaptability in a fast-paced environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Adhere to established safety protocols including infection control and safe patient handling.
• Provide direct patient interaction such as escorting patients, obtaining vital signs and EKGs, verifying medications and allergies, and documenting medical histories and visit reasons accurately and promptly.
• Manage communication by routing phone messages, addressing patient inquiries, and assisting with physician return calls.
• Support medication management including renewals, authorizations, and administration of oral, IM, and SQ medications as ordered.
• Perform point-of-care lab testing and collect specimens for laboratory analysis.
• Schedule appointments, surgeries, and diagnostic procedures as directed by providers.
• Complete necessary paperwork including prior authorizations and referrals efficiently.
• Maintain supply inventory and ensure exam areas are clean and well-stocked.
• Educate patients and guardians on electronic health record access and benefits.
• Assist in orienting and training new medical assistants.
• Demonstrate accountability, teamwork, and reliability while managing workload under pressure.

Education

Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant or Medical Specialist program or equivalent experience. High school diploma required.

Experience

At least one year of experience as a Medical Assistant or related medical specialist preferred. Experience in a clinical setting is advantageous.

Certification and Licenses

Preferred certification as a Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) or Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) from an accredited organization such as the American Medical Technologist (AMT). Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association is required.

Mental and Physical Requirements

Requires considerable mental focus. Physical demands include lifting up to 35 lbs, frequent walking, standing, turning, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, crouching, twisting, and reaching.

Working Conditions

Exposure to infectious diseases and occasional hostile individuals. Frequent contact with blood and bodily fluids. Minimal physical discomfort expected.
