Job Opportunities PLANNER Grade 68 – Wilkes County is seeking an individual to perform the duties of County Planner. The individual will be under the direct supervision of the Planning Director and will perform the following duties: Review land use applications to determine compliance with land use ordinances; Issue land use development permits; Research and prepare agendas and minutes for public meetings; Make presentations at public meetings; Review, interpret, update and assist in development and implementation of land use and related plans, policies, and studies including but not limited to zoning, watersheds, floodplains and subdivisions; Assist in preparation and administration of grants; Conduct investigations related to reported violations of land use ordinances; Issue notices of violation, and assist the public in resolving violations of land use ordinances; Prepare and present land use cases to designated boards; Maintain complete and accurate records of permits related to land use. Necessary skills include but are not limited to: proficiency in written and oral reports and public speaking; proficiency in computer skills such as Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and GIS mapping; ability to operate basic office equipment such as phone, printer, etc.; ability to read and interpret plans and blueprints; ability to provide technical support to the public, other departments, and designated boards in a timely and professional manner. Desirable education and experience: This position requires a Bachelor’s degree in planning, public administration, geography, or related field and some experience in community planning and/or GIS; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A valid North Carolina Class C Driver’s License is required. Physical Requirements and Working Conditions: Work in this position may require exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amounts of force constantly to move objects. Physical activities include climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, walking, pulling, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. The employee must have the visual acuity to prepare and analyze data/figures, operate a computer terminal, use measurement devices, operate a vehicle, and perform extensive reading. The employee is subject to indoor and outdoor environmental conditions. Hiring Rate: $46,406.00. Open until filled.
