About Grand Island Public Schools Nutrition Services The Mission of the Grand Island Public Schools (GIPS) Nutrition Services Department is to provide students and staff of the district with high quality service along with appealing, safe, nutritious meals that will enhance the learning process and well-being of our students. Our vision is that all students will be knowledgeable of the importance of good nutrition habits and incorporate these habits into everyday food choices to enhance the mind and body for optimal physical health and academic performance. GIPS Nutrition Services staff is committed to our mission and goals, serving almost 10,000 students at over 20 locations in Hall County.
Position Summary Under the direction of the Manager or Assistant Manager, the Head Cashier is responsible for ensuring the efficient operation of meal counting and account collection and the recording and depositing of all monies in accordance with all federal and district policies related to meal counting. Head Cashiers may perform other duties as assigned to meet program requirements.
Essential Position Responsibilities
- Efficiently scans or rings up sales of meals as students proceed through the meal lines.
- Ensures compliance with Offer versus Serve, Meal Pattern, as well as reimbursable meal requirements.
- Follow proper counting and claiming procedures, making appropriate change and maintaining required documentation (forms, etc.)
- Collects all monies to be received on student and staff meal accounts, accurately records monies deposited and prepares daily bank deposit; Notifies Central Office if deposit does not match daily report.
- Works with Manager or Assistant Manager to maintain positive account balances by notifying and contacting parents, students and staff as needed regarding negative account balances.
- Accurately processes meals using the computerized point of sale system.
- Submits Daily Report Form to Nutrition Services Central Office.
- Assists Nutrition Services Central Office in collecting Free and Reduced Meal Applications.
- Maintains confidentiality of students' eligibility status.
- Follows all procedures of the Nutrition Services Department, communicating any issues to the Manager or designee.
- Assist with food preparation and portioning.
- Assists with maintaining a clean and orderly lunch room and performs stocking as needed in the serving areas and cleaning up assigned areas before and after serving period.
- Monitors other cashiers for accuracy and compliance with procedures.
- Works cooperatively with the Manager, Nutrition Assistants and school personnel to maintain an atmosphere of teamwork.
- Provides excellent customer service at all times, acting as a point of contact for students, staff and the public.
- Regular, dependable, in person attendance is an essential function of the job.

Essential Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Attending and passing a minimum of four (4) of hours continuing education to meet annual Professional Standards training requirements compliance.
- Valid Nebraska Driver's License is required, in addition to a clean driving record.
- Ability to understand and apply knowledge of federal and district requirements related to the meal counting and associated job responsibilities.
- Ability to read and follow oral and written instructions and directions needed to complete forms and adhere to policy and procedure requirements.
- Ability to enter back-of-house deposits and prepare deposits for banks.
- Ability to perform basic math calculations (add, subtract, multiply, divide) quickly and accurately. Familiarity with and operating knowledge of point of service terminals, cash registers, adding machines and money handling.
- Ability to use effective oral communication skills including the ability to establish an environment of teamwork and maintain rapport with the nutrition services staff, students and public.
- Ability to utilize e-mail and computerized point of sale systems.
- Ability to perform some food prep work and assembly.
Physical and Environmental Considerations Nutrition Services staff may be assigned to work in one or more buildings and must be adaptable to changing environments. The physical environments may include warehouses, central kitchens, school kitchens, food serving areas and physical lunchrooms. The nature of the schedules and activities in this environment is fast paced and often crowded.
Position generally requires walking or standing for extended periods of time; the ability to exert up to 25 pounds of force to lift, push, pull, carry or otherwise move objects; movement including bending, stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling and operating tools and equipment that require manual dexterity.
Exposure to typical kitchen hazards from tools, equipment, etc. exists and in all environments, noise levels are generally moderate and temperature controlled, though heat and humidity can be a factor. The environment contains potential hazards and exposures including, but not limited to: Cleaning Solvents, Electrical Shock, Fire Potential, Fumes, High Temperatures, Hot Cooking Surfaces, Hot Grease, Moving Machinery, Dishwashers, Sharp Objects, Slippery Floors, Steam, Water Pressure. This position may require the following physical demands:
