Who we are looking for:
The Field Chemist & Technical Support Engineer is a growth-focused technical position designed to strengthen Milestone's field service, technical support, training, and customer support capabilities as the business continues to expand. Based within commuting distance of our Shelton, Connecticut headquarters, this hybrid role combines customer-facing Field Chemist responsibilities with in-house technical support, troubleshooting, training, depot repair, and operational support activities.
The successful candidate will serve as a versatile technical resource supporting field operations, customer projects, onboarding activities, internal initiatives, and organizational growth while working closely with Service, Product, Quality, Technical Support, and milesCARE teams.
Responsibilities:
Customer Installations, Training & Support
- Install Milestone instrumentation, including setup, calibration, validation, and customer onboarding.
- Deliver customer training on instrument operation, workflows, applications, and laboratory best practices.
- Support complex installations and specialized customer projects while providing application, technical, and operational support to clients.
- Participate in milesCARE activities and customer success programs.
- Support strategic, VIP, and high-visibility customer accounts when additional technical resources are required.
Field Service & Customer Coverage
- Travel throughout the United States to provide flexible field coverage and technical support during periods of increased workload, employee leave, and onboarding transitions.
- Troubleshoot, repair, maintain, and support Milestone instrumentation in customer laboratories.
- Perform preventative maintenance and major maintenance activities.
- Support complex service situations and customer escalations.
- Shadow, mentor, and support onboarding of newly hired Field Service Engineers and Field Chemists.
Technical Support, Quality & Operations
- Support technical troubleshooting, depot repairs, equipment refurbishment, and root-cause investigations for field personnel and customers.
- Assist with technical documentation, onboarding, training programs, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Support Quality Control activities, equipment testing, and verification efforts.
- Maintain readiness of demonstration, training, and Apps Lab instrumentation while supporting customer demonstrations and product initiatives.
- Serve as a flexible technical resource supporting Service, Product, Quality, and Technical Support teams to improve customer responsiveness and organizational effectiveness.
Requirements:
- Education : Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or a related scientific field
- Laboratory Experience : 2 years of hands-on laboratory experience. Experience with analytical instrumentation, sample preparation, or metals analysis preferred.
- Electromechanical Ability : Strong electromechanical aptitude and comfort working hands-on with instrumentation hardware. Field service, instrument maintenance, or other technical experience is a plus.
- Client Development : Ability to understand customer needs, recommend solutions, and recognize opportunities to expand the client relationship. Prior applications, technical sales, or similar customer-facing experience is a plus.
- Communication : Strong communication skills with the ability to train clients and explain scientific and technical concepts clearly.
- Travel & Independence : Experience independently managing a travel-intensive territory, including frequent overnight travel (up to 4 clients per week).
- Computer skills : Proficiency with Microsoft Office; Salesforce or other CRM experience is a plus.
- Valid driver's license and clean driving record.
