Purpose

Provides leadership for the strategic and operational direction for defined patient care areas in accordance with hospital guidelines and organizational philosophies. Key accountabilities include: Establish safety as a core value, endure the quality assurance performance improvement plans promote excellence in patient outcomes, maintain personal compliance with regulatory and professional standards, foster interdisciplinary collaborative relationships, oversight of human, fiscal, material and environmental resources. The Manager assists in creating a professional environment where team members are able to contribute to optimal patient outcomes and grow professionally. Essential Job Functions

• Responsible for staff hour timekeeping including delegation of submission of information and final approval.
• Responsible for final approval of surgery, general surgery, specialty clinic, anesthesia, pain management and central service charges.
• Effectively utilizes tools provided for financial, quality, and staffing monitoring and management.
• Utilizes available tools and data to measure and monitor performance related to quality of care, patient safety, and patient satisfaction; including but not limited to Key Performance Indicators, HCAHPS scores and audits. Creates action plans for areas needing improvement.
• Focuses on a culture of safety by proactively seeking safety concerns and promptly reporting and/or incident reports using root cause analysis and process improvement tools.
• Complies with regulatory requirements of such agencies as DIA, Joint Commission, AORN Guidelines.
• Establishes departmental goals which are aligned with the strategic goals and plan of the organization; continuously monitors of progress toward goals.
• Able to communicate to employees how the goals of the department connect to the overall strategic plan of the organization.
• Responsible for yearly capital and minor budget development, FTE's, expense sheets, etc.

Responsibilities and Duties

• Effectively communicates and assists in conflict resolution with surgeons, anesthesia providers, staff and patients.
• Establishes an environmental culture for retention as evidenced by results of employee engagement surveys. Utilizes survey data to make improvements in the work environment based on employee feedback.
• Establishes a culture of trust with employees through employee rounding and timely, effective coaching and performance management.
• Serves as a mentor and role model for staff, students, and colleagues.
• Maintains a just culture.
• Demonstrates emotional intelligence and applies that knowledge in day-to-day leadership activities.
• Adapt in skills required to effectively lead a team including conflict management.
• Facilitates team conversations that allow for individual participation and contribution of all members.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities - Competencies

• Completes all annual education and competency requirements within the calendar year.
• Is knowledgeable of hospital and department compliance requirements for federally funded programs (e.g. Medicare and Medicaid).
• Brings any concerns regarding compliance to the immediate attention of hospital administrative staff.
• Must be able to communicate effectively with people of diverse professional, educational, and lifestyle backgrounds.
• Able to exercise judgement in problem situations.
• Demonstrates the ability to understand system, process, and workflow issues while problem solving.
• Must be highly motivated and self-directed.

Supervisory Responsibility

Divisional/ Multi-Level: The job requires direct responsibility for the management of multiple departments with varying amounts of staff assigned to each. Collaborates daily surgery schedule and staff schedule. Provides leadership in the implementation of patient care strategies.

Materials Responsibility

Moderate: Work requires high responsibility for material resources. Examples of resources could include operating budgets for a work unit or department, specialized equipment, costly or unusual materials or supplies, building new charges for supplies, large amounts of cash or other material assets. The employee has a moderate amount of control over these resources. The cost of errors might result in moderate damage, waste or financial loss. The difficulty, variety and depth of problems associated with these material resources is moderately complex.

Position Specifications

Education: Bachelor's Degree or obtains within 3 years

Field of Study: Nursing

Special Training: Basic Life Support, ACLS PALS, Dependent Adult/Child Abuse Mandatory Training within timelines established in the Licensure, Registration, Certification and Life Saving training policy.

Training Preferred: Master’s Degree in Nursing

Licensure / Registration: Licensed Nurse in state of Iowa and Association of perioperative Room Nurses (AORN) membership Experience: Two year's experience in the Operating Room scrubbing. Two year's of experience of leadership

Interpersonal Skills

Interaction is with a variety of people inside and outside the organization. Communications are difficult or stressful in nature. Contact with others involves complex, detailed and often sensitive topics. The job requires a high degree of interpersonal skills to deal with a range of complicated problem situations. Interactions involve gaining the agreement of others. Must be highly motivated and very organized. Must be able to have crucial conversations and be able to Stop the Line.

Working Conditions

There is limited exposure to moderately adverse and undesirable environmental conditions. There are some health and safety risks. Position may require safety equipment and precautions. The amount of time the employee may experience these moderate conditions is limited to 10% or less of their work day. Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/ or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/ or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Duties performed routinely require exposure to blood, body fluid and tissue. Hazards exposure to fumes, wet and/ or humid conditions, noise, gases, mechanical hazards, chemical hazards, electrical hazards, radiant energy hazards and burn hazards.
