Job Title: Emergency Department Registered Nurse Profession: Registered Nurse Specialty: Emergency Duration: 18 weeks Shift: Day/Night Variable Hours per Shift: 12 Experience: Two years of general nursing experience, with one year in emergency department License: Registered Nurse License Certifications: BLS, ACLS, PALS, Stroke Certification Must-Have: Two years of acute hospital experience as a Registered Nurse and one year of emergency department experience as a Registered Nurse Description: The Emergency Department Registered Nurse applies knowledge of nursing theory, technical skills, and communication skills in delivering high-quality compassionate care to patients and families. The ED RN assesses patient needs, identifies urgent or emergent care priorities, and collaboratively provides direct care. They apply appropriate interventions and evaluate patient progress. The ED RN demonstrates skill in the use of various invasive and non-invasive procedures, treatments, and therapeutic interventions. This role involves managing life-threatening and routine emergency situations effectively. The ED RN utilizes the principles of relationship-based care to alleviate anxiety, provide information, and address pain, discomfort, and safety. They assess the physiological, psychosocial, emotional, and cultural needs of patients of all age groups and their families. During triage, the ED RN connects with patients and families, identifying initial management and assigning priority of care. They establish rapport with patients and families, addressing comfort needs and providing frequent updates. The ED RN conducts primary assessments of critical needs and documents any major deviations from norms within acceptable time frames. They accurately identify necessary steps and interventions required for patient care. The role requires direct observation, patient/family interviews, EMS reports, and data to conduct secondary assessments. They assess psychosocial needs and document any suspicion of domestic violence or abuse in all age groups. The ED RN reassesses patients to identify responses to treatment and changes in condition, responding appropriately. They encourage trust, respect, and cooperation among team members to achieve the best possible patient outcomes. The ED RN teaches others as appropriate and delegates tasks based on education, training, and scope of practice. They are responsible for compliance with infection prevention strategies. The ED RN prepares patients and families for diagnostic procedures and treatments. They make appropriate referrals for post-emergency care and teach patients about ongoing care needs at home. The role involves assessing patient/family learning styles to maximize understanding during educational sessions. The ED RN seeks to understand what is most important to patients and families, recognizing their central role in care and services. They embrace the importance of creating a Healing Environment as a key element of professional nursing practice. The ED RN keeps patients and significant others informed throughout the process of care. They anticipate patient and family needs and maintain awareness of the patient's condition throughout the emergency visit. The ED RN updates communication boards throughout the emergency department stay.
