General Summary
The Oncology Social Worker provides compassionate support by evaluating and addressing the psychosocial, spiritual, emotional, and economic needs of patients, families, and caregivers affected by cancer. This role connects individuals with appropriate resources and helps them navigate the challenges associated with their diagnosis. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Collaborate effectively with a multidisciplinary team to meet patient and family needs. Assess social determinants of health such as housing, food security, financial assistance, employment, language, and cultural barriers. Support patients and families with psychosocial concerns including diagnosis, treatment decisions, quality of life, care transitions, advance directives, and coping strategies. Communicate clearly and document interactions accurately while working independently and prioritizing tasks. Evaluate social, emotional, spiritual, financial, legal, and mental factors impacting patients and families, and their ability to cope with illness. Connect patients, families, and staff to community resources and provide appropriate follow-up. Educate staff and community members on psychosocial issues, social determinants of health, and available resources. Maintain productivity standards and complete documentation within established timeframes. Participate in relevant committees and meetings such as Cancer Committee and Cancer Conference. Provide safe, competent, and age-appropriate care to all referred patients regardless of diagnosis. Report any accidents or unusual patient symptoms to management promptly. Education
Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) required; Master of Social Work (MSW) preferred. Experience
At least one year of clinical experience in multidisciplinary settings is preferred. Certification/License
Licensed social worker preferred. Mental/Physical Requirements
Requires considerable mental concentration and excellent interpersonal and organizational skills. Approximately 80% of time is spent communicating with patients, families, visitors, employees, and physicians. Requires standing and walking for prolonged periods using proper body mechanics. Working Conditions
Minimal physical discomfort with frequent exposure to communicable diseases, radiation, anti-neoplastic agents, and occasionally hostile individuals. Ability to function effectively under stress is essential.
