NURSE-MIDWIFE (Certified Nurse-Midwife)

Role Overview Under medical direction, the Nurse‑Midwife provides care to mothers and babies through the maternity cycle of antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum, and neonatal for medically uncomplicated patients. The midwife also provides gynecological care, including family planning services. Essential Job Functions Review the patient’s chart and identify abnormalities indicating anything other than a normal birth. Obtain the patient’s medical history and perform an evaluative obstetrical examination, including taking vital signs, checking neurological reflexes, listening to fetal heartbeat, measuring uterine size, determining fetal position and estimated weight, and examining breasts and nipples. Perform internal pelvic examinations to assess dilation, station, fetal position, and membrane status. Interpret examination results within normal ranges and determine if physician consultation is required. Draw blood and complete routine laboratory request forms. Perform hematocrit analysis by centrifuging a blood sample, examining it with a microscope, and recording results for physician review. Under standing orders, manage admitted patients during labor—initiate IVs, administer medications, prepare the patient, instruct on labor procedures, provide counseling, monitor labor progress, and update the physician. Notify the physician and transfer the patient to the delivery room when impending delivery is indicated. Assist in the delivery room by providing emotional support and performing procedures such as pudendal block, episiotomy, repairs, and newborn resuscitation. Conduct periodic postpartum visits to evaluate mother and baby, monitor progress, and provide guidance on recovery and infant care. Participate in informal training of nurses and students and in refresher programs for nurse‑midwives. Provide gynecological care to healthy women under medical direction, performing pelvic examinations to screen for cancer and other abnormalities and referring cases to physicians. Provide direct family‑planning services, including fitting diaphragms and intrauterine devices and dispensing oral contraceptives. Counsel patients and provide referrals regarding family‑planning options. Requirements Applicants must meet all of the following requirements: Current and active license to practice as a Registered Nurse issued by the California Board of Registered Nursing. Current and active certificate to practice as a Nurse‑Midwife issued by the California Board of Registered Nursing. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers (CPR & AED) certification issued by the American Heart Association. Desirable Qualifications Experience as a Certified Nurse‑Midwife. Available Shifts Work may be required on evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays, depending on operational needs.
