Equipment Operator Senior - CDL Pathway

Position TransportDepartment – Equipment Operator Senior (CDL Pathway) Salary $24.00 – $33.80 per hour, commensurate with experience. Summary Senior Equipment Operator responsible for operating heavy‑duty backhoes, front‑end loaders, and other construction equipment used in street maintenance. The role requires a valid CDLClassA license; applicants without a license may attend an 8‑week commercial driver program at the time of hire. Major Duties and Responsibilities Operate heavy equipment such as gradall lines, front‑end loaders, backhoes, tandem dump trucks, track‑hoes, and paving machines. Haul material to and from job sites and assist with loading and unloading materials. Perform manual labor tasks, including digging trenches and other required earthwork. Assume a leadership role, complete paperwork in the absence of the crew chief, and assist the crew supervisor in supervising the crew. Locate underground services (e.g., pipes, wires) before construction. Assist the crew chief in establishing grades, setting batter boards, forming and placing concrete, and backfilling. Conduct routine inspections of equipment for mechanical readiness and safety. Comply with work and safety rules, OSHA regulations, and workplace hazard rules/regulations. Take action to avoid potential hazards or obstructions such as utility lines, other equipment, other workers, or falling objects. Participate in large‑scale field operations for street grading, construction, and repair. Coordinate machine actions with other activities, positioning or moving loads in response to hand or audio signals from crew members. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Safety – knowledge of OSHA, city, and federal rules, work hazards, and applicable safety precautions. Transportation – knowledge of principles and methods for moving people or goods by road, including related laws and ordinances. Customer and Personal Service – abilities to provide customer service, assess customer needs, meet quality standards, and evaluate satisfaction. Construction – knowledge of materials, methods, tools, and procedures used in street construction and maintenance. Operation and Control – ability to control equipment or systems. Operation Monitoring – ability to watch gauges, dials, or indicators to ensure proper machine operation. Monitoring – ability to assess performance of self, others, or organizations. Coordination – ability to adjust actions in relation to others’ actions. Equipment Maintenance – ability to perform routine maintenance and determine necessary repairs. Troubleshooting – ability to diagnose operating errors and decide on corrective action. Critical Thinking – logical reasoning to evaluate solutions and approaches to problems. Personnel Management – ability to motivate, develop, and direct people. Communication – speaking and active listening skills. Time Management – managing one’s own and others’ time. Control Precision, Depth Perception, Vision, Manual Dexterity, Rate Control, Reaction Time – motor skills necessary for operating heavy equipment. Oral and Written Comprehension – reading and understanding spoken and written information. Physical Abilities – sitting, standing, bending, twisting, reaching, kneeling, walking, driving, climbing, lifting and carrying up to 75lb, shoveling, pushing, and pulling. Minimum Qualifications At least two years’ experience independently operating complex construction equipment (backhoes, track‑hoes, front‑end loaders, paving machines, excavators, and tandems). If no valid CDLClassA license, must be eligible to attend a paid CDLClassA program upon hire, meeting the following: Minimum 18 years of age. Valid North Carolina driver’s license with no limiting restrictions. ClassA learner’s permit with no limiting restrictions. Pass a DOT physical and hold a valid DOT medical card. Pass a DOT drug screen. Ability to obtain and maintain a CDL tanker endorsement within six months of hire after obtaining the CDLClassA license. Preferred Qualifications Roadway construction experience. OSHA 10‑hour certification.
