RN Psychiatric Emergency Nurse

Job Summary:

The Registered Nurse in the Psychiatric Emergency Room provides specialized nursing care focused on mental health patients. This role involves conducting patient intake assessments, developing and implementing nursing care plans, administering psychotropic medications, and collaborating with psychiatrists and behavioral health staff. The nurse ensures a safe environment for patients and staff, maintains accurate documentation, and delivers high-quality patient service. A minimum of two years of experience and an active NY RN license are required. Responsibilities:

• Conduct intake assessments through patient and family interviews to gather case history.
• Plan and provide nursing care tailored to the medical and emotional needs of psychiatric patients.
• Make nursing diagnoses and recommend treatment options.
• Collaborate with psychiatrists and behavioral health staff to design appropriate treatment plans.
• Administer psychotropic drugs and other medications, monitoring patient reactions.
• Arrange further medical attention as necessary.
• Assist patients in understanding their emotional disturbances and the need for treatment.
• Maintain a safe and secure environment for patients and staff.
• Monitor vital signs and manage pain treatment.
• Document all patient information accurately on medical charts and follow physician orders.
• Maintain patient confidentiality and accurate medical records.
• Perform administrative duties such as filing, answering phones, typing, and completing progress notes electronically.
• Provide courteous and high-quality service to patients and the public, responding to requests or making referrals.

Required Skills & Certifications:

• Active Registered Nurse license in New York State.
• Minimum of two years of nursing experience.
• BLS Certification from the American Heart Association.
• Strong clinical assessment and medication administration skills.
• Experience in psychiatric or behavioral health nursing preferred.
• Proficient in maintaining accurate documentation and medical records.

Preferred Skills & Certifications:

• Experience with telemetry monitoring.
• Familiarity with EPIC electronic medical record system.
• Prior experience in emergency or psychiatric emergency room settings.

Special Considerations:

• Work includes holidays, on-call, callback, and charge nurse responsibilities as needed.
• Must maintain patient confidentiality and ensure a safe environment.
• Psychiatric Emergency Room environment requiring strong communication and crisis management skills.
• Compliance with hospital policies regarding blocked weekend nights on inpatient units.
• Candidate must be able to obtain TB skin test.

Scheduling:

• Straight night shifts only.
• 48 hours per week schedule.
• Shift assignments based on unit needs.
