The Pharmacy Manager will be an expert in pharmacy operations and medication-use systems. This Manager will take on advanced responsibilities in the areas of pharmacy operations, technology and automation, medication safety, quality improvement, compliance, technician oversight and training, medication compounding and preparation, and education related to all aspects of pharmacy operations.  The Pharmacy Manager will report to the Administrative Services Director to provide safe, timely, efficient, equitable, effective and patient-centered medication use. This is a full-time, 40 hr/wk position with typically Monday-Friday normal business hours, occasional response to after-hours calls.

•   A $20,000 sign-on bonus is eligible with the full time position.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and/or Experience

•             Pharmacy Degree (PharmD or B.S.)

•             One to three years previous experience in the specialized function of hospital pharmacy services is desirable including inpatient, emergency services, and infusion clinic services

•             Prior management experience highly preferred

•             Must demonstrate strong attention to details and work with minimal supervision

•             Ability to research evidence-based medicine and regulatory requirements; excellent organization skills with high attention to detail

•             Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Certificates, Licensure, Registrations

•             Active Nebraska state pharmacist license (or ability to obtain prior to employment)

•             BLS certified within 6 months of hire

•             Nebraska Pharmacist-In-Charge, upon hire

•             Power of Attorney for purchasing of controlled substances, upon hire

SIGNIFICANT DUTIES 

•             Responsible for operational systems to assure appropriate prescribing, distribution, administration, and monitoring outcomes of drug therapy processes.

•             Maintain Pharmacist-In-Charge responsibilities in accordance to Nebraska Statutes 71-470 and 38-2867.02, including: 

o             developing , establishing, and implementing policies and procedure for the practice of pharmacy and medication use in the hospital;  

o             developing  and implementing policies and procedures to ensure that a pharmacist reviews all medical orders prior to first dose to a patient in the hospital; 

o             establishing policies and procedures for validation of medication by two or more certified pharmacy technicians before such validation process is implemented in the hospital; 

o             responsible for the supervision, performance and competence of the pharmacy technicians;

•             Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local laws, rules, and regulations.

•             Ensure compliance with health system policies and procedures that apply to pharmacy services.

•             Develop and enforce policies and procedures that promote cost-effective, appropriate, and safe medication use in accordance with state, federal, and CMS regulations.

•             Manage technology and automation to allow for optimum resources.  Evaluate new automation that may bring additional value to the organization.

•             Assure that existing automation is being utilized at the highest level of efficiency, and develop efficiency standards for each.

•             Collaborate with facility staff to develop, implement, and operate automated programs and software for pharmacy information management systems.

•             Conduct post-implementation assessment of pharmacy automation enhancements and new pharmacy programs to ensure desired changes are achieved. Change systems to achieve desired results.

•             Assure compliance within sterile compounding (USP 797) and non-sterile compounding practices (USP 795).

•             Develop policies and procedures and assure compliance with current standards for the safe handling of hazardous drugs (USP 800).

•             Review reports for medication errors, adverse drug events, ineffective service, or other problem identification.  Analyze and implement quality improvement measures for improving organizational performance.

•             Analyze records to indicate prescribing trends and excessive or inappropriate usage of medications.

•             Attend Medical Staff Meetings to advise and inform the medical staff of medication applications and characteristics. 

•             Serve and/or lead on hospital committees, as directed.

•             Actively participate in professional pharmacy organizations (i.e., ASHP, NPA, APhA, ISMP)

•             Provide for the educational needs of health care professionals, patients, and their families.

•             Develop and maintains a medical staff-approved formulary through Pharmacy & Therapeutics.

•             Supervise medication storage and preparation areas throughout the facility.

•             Assure adequate control and documentation of controlled substances.

•             Ensure maintenance of an adequate medication supply. Ensure the integrity of the medication supply.

•             Establish specifications for the procurement of medications, chemicals, and biologicals.

•             Oversee the development and operation of the systems for distribution of all medications within the hospital. Ensure strict control and accountability for medications dispensed to patients or distributed to floor stock.

•             Provide for the educational needs and competencies of the pharmacy staff.

•             Ensure applicable continuing education and licensure records are maintained in department files.

•             Supervise all pharmacy personnel and recruit, interview, promote, discipline, and terminate pharmacy staff as necessary.

•             Observe pharmacy personnel at work and develop quality assurance techniques to ensure safe, legal, and ethical practices within the department.  

•             Develop job descriptions and performance standards. Evaluate and counsel staff on their performance.

•             Approve department work schedules, approve payroll hours, and monitor workload statistics. Maintain an appropriate staffing level.

•             Prepare a pharmacy budget annually.

•             Review monthly financial statistics and plan expenditures within budget guidelines.

•             Monitor and justify all expenses exceeding budgeted targets.

•             Ensure preparation and submission of patient charges and financial reports to administration in accordance with policy.

•             Administer reports, documents, statistical surveys, and other required data.
