Job Description
Sterile Processing Technician (SPT)

Minimum Experience

3 years of experience required; first-time applicants will not be considered.

Patient Population

This position involves working in a busy Sterile Processing Department (SPD) servicing the Main Operating Room, which includes various specialties such as:

• General Surgery
• Gynecology (limited, primarily robotic procedures)
• Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery
• Open Heart Procedures
• Laparoscopic Surgery
• Urology
• Orthopedics
• Neuro Spine and Cranial Surgery
• Organ Procurement

Certifications Required

Certifications from either CBSPD or IAHCSMM/HSPA are preferred.

General Skills and Requirements

The candidate should be proficient with the following:

• Flexible Cystoscopes
• SPD Sterilization Equipment, including Steris Steam Sterilizers and Stryker VP4 Machines
• Decontamination Equipment, such as Steris and Belimed Ultrasonic Washers, Steris Cart Washers, and Steris Washer/Disinfectors

Ability to mentor new employees and serve as a knowledgeable resource for the central services team is essential.

Performance Expectations

All SPD contractors are expected to maintain:

• A bioburden error rate of 0.1% or less on a monthly basis
• An average tray volume of 20 per day, based on an average of 100 instruments per tray

Unit Systems

Experience with SPM systems is advantageous.

Schedule and Availability

Shift: Night (5x8 hour shifts from 23:00 to 07:30)

Availability to work every other weekend is required.

Floating within sectors of SPD may be necessary.

Call requirements are rare.

Holiday Commitment

The incumbent is expected to work one major holiday during their assignment period. If two major holidays occur, the individual must work both. For three major holidays, they are expected to work at least two. Major holidays include:

• Memorial Day
• Independence Day
• Labor Day
• Thanksgiving/Black Friday
• Christmas Eve/Christmas Day
• New Year's Eve/New Year's Day

Compliance

Full compliance with credentials and documentation is required prior to starting. Delays in compliance may result in a postponement of start date due to established orientation schedules.

Clinical Screening

Candidates will undergo a clinical screening to assess fit and must meet the established guidelines to proceed to the final decision stage.

Additional Information

Local candidates are accepted at the same rate.

The number of non-billable orientation hours is determined by the length of the contract.
