Compliance Officer I

As a Compliance Officer I in the Sales & Special Taxes Compliance Section at the Office of State Tax Commissioner, you'll work daily to research compliance issues, provide prompt and accurate service through phone calls and email responses, and work to educate taxpayers and businesses on North Dakota sales and special taxes laws. You should be curious and independent in seeking solutions to complex questions and be able to provide exceptional customer service through a variety of communication tools. This position requires a high degree of confidentiality and the ability to critically think, and problem solve.

The hiring salary range for this position is $4,593 to $5,300/month. Telework on a rotating schedule is an option after successful completion of the probationary period.


Summary of Work


In this position, you will provide taxpayer assistance daily and be on the phone frequently answering a variety of compliance questions. You will work with systems that manage a variety of taxes in the sales and special taxes area and work to become knowledgeable about North Dakota tax law, administrative rules, and exemption requirements. Duties of the position include:

• Assist taxpayers, providing information regarding tax law, administrative rules, policy, and department procedures.
• Research and maintain a working knowledge of sales and special tax laws, rules, and administrative policies to provide excellent taxpayer assistance and efficient processing of taxpayer requests and section programs.
• Assist in the administration of sales tax compliance section processes and programs.
• Utilize the department's integrated tax system and database software to complete work duties.

Minimum Qualifications


Requires one of the following:

• Bachelor's degree; OR
• High school diploma/GED and 4 or more years' experience in banking, bookkeeping, business administration, legal, public administration, economics, or similar field; OR
• A combination of education and experience as defined above totaling at least 4 years.
