Senior Academic Counselor

Senior Academic Counselor (Academic Advisor / Counselor) North Carolina Central University is seeking a Senior Academic Counselor to provide screening, counseling, and support to nursing students. Position Overview As Senior Academic Counselor, the individual will interview, advise, and counsel students regarding admission procedures and academic requirements for the nursing degree program; coordinate and refer support services; develop and maintain individualized action plans; implement retention strategies; mentor other advisors; and facilitate training sessions and success strategy sessions for students. Responsibilities Coordinate student success strategy workshops each semester to help students identify barriers and solutions. Mentor new academic advisors and facilitate orientation, ensuring best‑practice training. Advise students on degree and program requirements, course scheduling, and nursing program options; record interview notes and provide feedback to admission committees. Implement advising initiatives and protocols for targeted populations, maintain individualized action plans, and determine retention actions. Lead and train advising staff, perform quality checks, review advisor work, and develop training curriculum. Coordinate and facilitate training sessions for academic advisors regarding updates in nursing and university policies. Develop and administer retention programs, analyze academic data, and prepare reports to inform strategy. Supervise work assignments, delegate projects, and ensure successful completion of student‑success initiatives. Qualifications Master’s degree and at least four years of experience in student services, counseling, or professional academic advising. All degrees from accredited institutions. Commitment to diversity and inclusion; ability to work with diverse populations. Knowledge of university and pre‑professional curriculum requirements, nursing program criteria, and general college admission requirements. Proficiency in advising practices, principles, and standard statistical analysis techniques. Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills; strong analytical abilities. Proficiency in computer programs for database development, data retrieval, and report creation. Ability to work independently and collaboratively with others.
