Job Profile Summary This role focuses on providing medical and clinical support services to patients. The surgical technician works under the supervision of the surgical team in the operating room to deliver patient care throughout the perioperative experience. Responsibilities include maintaining aseptic technique, preparing and organizing instruments, assisting the surgeon, managing intra‑operative medications, and ensuring proper decontamination and turnover of the operating room. Job Overview The candidate is a proficient Surgical Technician working under moderate supervision. The role requires the ability to handle routine problems, interpret or deviate from standard procedures, and communicate information requiring explanation. Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent. Before July1,2013: employed as a surgical technologist in a surgical facility, or completed a military training program for surgical technology, or graduated from an accredited Surgical Tech Program. After July1,2013: Surgical Technologist Certification (CST) required. 12months to less than 3years of healthcare experience. Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification. Duties and Responsibilities Functions in a professional manner as the Surgical Technologist in the operating room during all stages of surgical procedures. Maintains strict aseptic technique during set‑up, patient draping and throughout the procedure. Scrubs on surgical cases, organizes instrumentation, and participates in surgical counts. Selects and prepares appropriate instruments, supplies and equipment for cases. Performs related activities under the direction of the surgeon. Performs all counts with the circulating nurse according to policy. Manages intraprocedural medications in accordance with policy. Manages specimens according to physician orders and hospital policy. Follows procedures for decontamination of instrumentation, equipment and room turnover. Assists with positioning, moving and transporting patients as needed. Reports equipment and supply problems to the charge nurse, service lead or clinical nursing director. Assists with room turnover activities and positioning when not on surgical cases. Participates in quality improvement, continuing education, orientation of new personnel and emergency preparedness. Remains knowledgeable about service‑specific equipment for safe and efficient utilization. Maintains collaborative relationships with peers and colleagues to create a positive work environment. Preceptor for staff in training. Assists in orientation of new personnel (aides, orderlies, technicians, nurses) to protocols, policies, rules and regulations of the operating suite. Physical Requirements Work within the semi‑restricted and restricted environment of the operating room and perioperative support areas. Stand under hot surgical lights for prolonged periods. Risk of muscle strain from lifting patients and heavy equipment, shocks and burns from cautery units and autoclaves, cuts from sharp instruments. Frequent exposure to hazardous chemicals, blood, bodily fluids, extreme noise, radiation, lasers and temperature fluctuations. Wear protective lead apron for extended periods and exposure to radioactivity, harmful anesthesia gases and septic infections. Frequent lifting, positioning and transportation of patients, materials, equipment and instruments. Frequent contact with patients, physicians and nursing staff in the operating room. Skills & Abilities Advanced knowledge of aseptic technique and infection prevention practices. Intermediate knowledge of anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, microbiology and pharmacology. Intermediate knowledge of computers, surgical equipment and infrastructure. Intermediate knowledge and skills to provide care to patients throughout the lifespan. Excellent interpersonal skills to interact with staff, patients, physicians, vendors and other departments. Demonstrates advanced knowledge in procedures related to the surgical specialty area and sufficient general knowledge to assist other specialties. Displays proficient knowledge of procedures performed outside the specialty, supporting multiple service lines and case types.
