Under the direction of faculty and nursing leadership, the APP Supervisor provides clinical, operational, and strategic leadership for Advanced Practice Providers (Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants) within the Department of Psychiatry across inpatient and outpatient settings. This role oversees APP practice operations, supports quality and regulatory standards, and partners closely with physician, nursing, and administrative leadership to advance patient care delivery, workforce development, and operational effectiveness. The APP Supervisor serves as a clinical leader, mentor, and resource for APP staff while fostering a collaborative, patient-centered care environment. In addition to leadership responsibilities, the APP Supervisor maintains clinical practice responsibilities, including patient assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, documentation, and patient/family education in collaboration with faculty and interdisciplinary teams. The position also supports departmental and systemwide APP initiatives, including APP professional development, fellowship and trainee coordination, implementation of APP best practice models, and operational initiatives that improve integration and effectiveness of APP practice across the health system. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Clinical & Operational Leadership Provide leadership and oversight for APP operations across inpatient and outpatient psychiatry services. Support high-quality, patient-centered care delivery and ensure adherence to clinical, regulatory, and professional practice standards. Collaborate with physician, nursing, and administrative leadership to optimize workflows, staffing, and operational performance. APP Supervision & Professional Development Supervise, mentor, evaluate, and support professional development for APP staff. Foster a collaborative and accountable practice environment focused on engagement, teamwork, and continuous improvement. Support APP onboarding, orientation, competency development, and performance management activities. Program & Strategic Initiatives Support implementation of APP best practice models and participate in department and UC-wide APP initiatives. Assist with coordination of APP fellowship and trainee programs, including clinical rotations and educational activities. Contribute to operational, process improvement, and strategic initiatives that enhance APP integration and care delivery across the department and health system. Administrative & Compliance Oversight Support fiscal, operational, and regulatory responsibilities related to APP practice operations. Ensure compliance with applicable institutional, accreditation, licensing, and professional practice standards. Maintain appropriate confidentiality and safeguard sensitive information in accordance with organizational policies and regulatory requirements. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Must be a graduate from an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program. NP: Current California Registered Nurse (RN) license, California Nurse Practitioner (NP) license, Furnishing License Certification, and Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Certification (PMHNP). PA: Current California Physician Assistant (PA) license and current PA Certification from NCCPA. Valid DEA license, and/or ability to furnish upon hire. Certified by the County to place patients on legal holds (e.g. 5150, 5250). Must pass 5150 examination and be certified by the county as a 5150 designee. Current BART certification, or BLS/CPR certification at time of hire with commitment to get BART within six (6) months of hire date. A minimum of five (5) or more years of relevant experience as a NP or PA. Must have experience as a provider in psychiatry. A minimum of two (2) or more years of supervisory/leadership experience. Demonstrated ability to effectively manage a team of nurse practitioners, complex workflows, and competing priorities. Responsible for understanding and communicating an advanced knowledge of national, state, and local educational and legislative issues affecting nurse practitioners. Demonstrated knowledge of state and national regulatory requirements. Promulgates advanced knowledge of institutional, state, and practice specialty professional standards and best practices. Strong knowledge of human resources management policies, with the ability to train, monitor, evaluate, and document staff issues and performance. Participates in decisions on human resources matters. Must be able to maintain confidentiality. Excellent leadership, fiscal, and operational management skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with physicians, management, and staff from all disciplines. Ability to create and maintain a goal-oriented climate of teamwork, collaboration, and consistent achievement of objectives. Advanced interpersonal skills for effective collaborations with all levels of clinical staff and management, consultants, researchers, and outside agencies. Demonstrated ability in advanced written and verbal communications skills. Able to train and mentor subordinates, convey complex clinical and technical information in a clear and concise manner. Prepares and presents a variety of reports, documentation, analyses, and project proposals. Knowledge of clinical and administrative software and specialized applications and data management systems used by nurse practitioners in providing advanced-practice nursing care, research, documentation, and employee supervision. Ability to analyze and advise leadership regarding purchasing decision of these systems. Ability to gather clinical information, develop differential diagnoses, and create problem lists independently. Competent to direct patient management and lead care team. In-depth knowledge of a broad scope of relevant regulatory requirements, as well as legislative, accreditation, licensing and compliance environments. Demonstrated ability to coordinate and manage recruiting tasks for trainees. Advanced experience in evaluating APP performance and delivering performance feedback. Demonstrated ability to coordinate and oversee fellow rotations/scheduling to provide necessary oversight during clinical rotations of fellows during all operational hours. Demonstrated expertise with curriculum development based on accreditation criteria, evaluations and scheduling. Strong knowledge of development and implementation of APP Best Practice Models; and ensuring appropriate professional development opportunities are developed and implemented. Demonstrated leadership in developing formal communication structure for APP within the department to ensure staff is an active participant in care delivery and department function- this support shared governance structure for Magnet. Proven superior leadership skills in oversight and management of contract and grant-related work. Demonstrated extensive experiences in training, monitoring, evaluating, and documenting staff issues and performance. Proven ability to develop appropriate feedback mechanisms and track the professional development of preceptors. Extensive experiences in Coordinating preceptor orientation and development workshop using a valid and reliable method. Demonstrated expertise managing grant funds and subcontract agreements and ensuring there is adequate NP staff to meet the obligations of this grant and ensure funds are used as agreed upon in the grant terms. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Current UCSD experience. Inpatient psychiatry experience. SPECIAL CONDITIONS Must be able to work various hours and locations based on business needs. Must be flexible and willing to work at multiple locations, potentially moving between locations on a daily or weekly basis to meet cross-coverage and departmental needs. Must be available to work holidays and weekends. Must have available transportation and able to commute between clinical sites as needed. Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical. Must be able to obtain UCSD Medical Staff privileges and maintain during employment. Due to advanced practice credentialing eligibility, clinical advanced practice experience must be within the last two years gained through school or work experience. Exercise the utmost discretion in managing sensitive information learned in the course of performing their duties. Sensitive information includes but is not limited to employee and student records, health and patient records, financial data, strategic plans, proprietary information, and any other sensitive or non-public information learned during the course and scope of employment. Ensure that sensitive information is properly safeguarded. Follow all organizational policies and laws on data protection and privacy. This includes secure handling of physical and digital records and proper usage of IT systems to prevent data leaks. The unauthorized or improper disclosure of confidential work-related information obtained from any source on any work-related matter is a violation of these expectations.
