Assistant Banquet Manager

Brief Position Overview MSU Catering is looking for motivated team members who are excited to actively participate in the ever changing world of the fast‑paced food and catering industries. General Statement Culinary Services Division (CSD), a division of Auxiliary Services, provides meals and specialty beverages for over 18,000 customers daily and is an integral part of campus life and the overall college experience. CSD proudly provides Montana State University students with not only a repertoire of various cuisines, cooking styles, and flavors, but a comfortable atmosphere to meet friends, study, and simply relax. Duties and Responsibilities Actively manages the back‑hall production area including event set‑up, food presentation, service, cleanup activities, and storage of catering items. Ensures client’s expectations are met (presentation/service, food quality, etc). Supervises and schedules the 50+ student and temporary staff and assists with directing the Floor Supervisor team Performs duties related to hiring, training, performance management, etc. Oversees 2 Backhall Floor Supervisors in their daily duties. Assists with a variety of administrative duties such as student/temporary staff payroll, inventory, supply orders, production sheets, etc. May design, research, and actively set decorations for events. Assists clients with facility set‑up and coordinates with other campus entities as needed. Participates with the catering team during menu and recipe development. Assists with controlling food and labor costs. Ensures equipment and the catering vehicle fleet is in good repair and operational. Familiar with trending catering ideas and suggests strategies for presentation and service. Ensures compliance with FDA codes and as directed by MSU’s Registered Sanitarian for sanitation guidelines and food handling and storage. Steps in to act as the Banquet Manager during absences to manage the backhall. Actively participates as a member of the team while performing other duties in support of the department’s mission. Position Special Requirements / Additional Information Must possess a valid driver’s license and meet all State of Montana requirements to operate State/University vehicles. Please do not send a copy of your driver’s license at this time. (If the successful candidate possesses a valid out‑of‑state driver’s license, the candidate must obtain a valid Montana driver’s license within 60 days.) Work schedule will vary from week to week depending on the needs of the department. Will work early mornings, evenings, nights, weekends, long hours, consecutive days during busy periods, and occasional holidays as the school and event schedule demands. Will work outside in inclement weather. Possess an 8‑hour management sanitation certification or have the ability to become certified. Must have the ability to understand and communicate in English with adequate proficiency to follow directions from supervisor, read and understand safety guidelines and directions to prevent accidents or injuries from occurring, and communicate effectively with customers (staff, visitors, students). Physical Demands Normal office, kitchen, service areas, cooler, freezer, and dock environments. Stationary and/or moving about for long periods of time. Frequently moving all sorts of shapes and sizes of food service delivery and presentation items weighing up to 30lb; occasionally moving containers weighing up to 50lb. Gripping handles on small kitchen utensils and other equipment. Performing repetitive motions related to job duties. Exposure to cleaning chemicals on a daily basis. Occasionally work outside and in inclement weather. The Successful Candidate Will Work effectively and efficiently in close cooperation with CS staff in a team‑oriented environment. Maintain composure while working with a broad spectrum of personalities under stress, pressure, and time‑sensitive demands of the job. Be able to operate and maintain departmental equipment. Be knowledgeable about State and Federal health and food safety guidelines.
