JOB SUMMARY:
An Entry Manual Machinist is a tradesperson who assists in setting up and operating various machines, such as lathes, mills, and grinders, to fabricate, modify, or repair mechanical equipment. In addition, they help diagnose equipment and instrumental malfunctions and implement repairs. The apprentice then assists with various quality assurance procedures on the fixed piece to ensure working order after aiding with reassembly. They also help with daily shop equipment maintenance, such as oiling, minor repairs, and error diagnosis.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Aid in overhaul work by replacing and repairing existing mechanical equipment.
- Review work order specifications, blueprints, and mechanical data to determine the correct tools used.
- Plan the sequence of necessary actions for the work order's successful completion.
- Assist in selecting the appropriate machines, positions, or load materials for each job.
- Assist in operating machines and equipment following the work order’s specifications.
- Use precision instruments such as internal & external micrometers, calipers, bore gauges, depth gauges, verniers, and dial indicators.
- Help monitor machinery and execute feed and speed adjustments.
- Hold tolerances T.I.R. with assistance.
- Utilize hand tools to mark and measure various materials for cutting and shaping.
- Must comply with all company safety requirements, including OSHA safety standards.
- Assist in routine shop maintenance and cleaning to ensure a safe & clean work environment.
- Accurately diagnose tool wear by visual inspection.
- Document and record all approved and defective parts.
- Report all faulty tools, machinery, or equipment to the Safety Manager (Coordinator.)
- Calculate dimensions and tolerances using advanced mathematics (geometry.)
- Assist in providing feedback/recommendations on equipment, fixtures, and work-holding procedures to improve company productivity and eliminate waste.
- Employee tasks are subject to change to keep up with business demands.
SKILLS, QUALIFICATIONS, AND REQUIREMENTS:
- Legal authorization to work in the United States is required.
- English verbal and written language comprehension is required.
- High school diploma or G.E.D. certification from an accredited school is required.
- An accredited trade school certificate or associate's degree in precision machining, machining technology, or manual machining is preferred.
- Fifty hours or more of machining experience from an accredited trade school, college, or apprenticeship is preferred.
- One or more years of machining experience with rotating equipment in a related field is preferred.
- Above-average mathematic skills
- Above-average mechanical aptitude
- Basic millwork comprehension is preferred.
- Imperial and metric units for measuring.
- Ability to learn to set up and run lathes mills, drill presses, grinders, and shapers.
- Must be willing to learn how to read blueprints, drawings, written manuals, and data.
- Willing to train how to mill slots, pockets, and keyways.
- Willing to learn to drill, tap, grind, and ruff components.
- Willing to learn hole pattern comprehension.
- Learn various material specifications (hardness, speed, feed, and technique requirements.)
- Learn to calculate threading information to achieve optional fit.
- Learn comprehension of lathe tool heights.
- Above-average organizational skills
- Ability to work independently and within a team
- Experience in a shop environment with rapid changeovers is a plus.
- Working knowledge of the oil and gas industry is a plus
WORK CONDITIONS:
- Primarily inside a climate-controlled shop atmosphere.
- On-the-job cross-training on equipment with a machinist.
- Daily interaction with fellow employees, supervisors, and customers.
- Working near machinery with moderate noise levels
- Wearing designated protection safety wear P.P.E. (eyeglasses & ear protection.)
- Close facility to tight spaces near the equipment

- Ability to stand for long periods

- Ability to pull, lift, and carry items up to 50 IBS.
- Ability to stoop, kneel, bend, and climb around machinery
- Adequate vision-depth perception to complete inspections.
- Good hand-eye coordination is required to use tools.
- Sufficient hearing and communication abilities with or without accommodation.
- Sufficient personal mobility to maneuver within a shop or plant environment with or without reasonable accommodation.
