Job Description

The HVAC Technician installs, maintains, and repairs a wide range of refrigeration, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems across a university campus. This role focuses heavily on service and preventative maintenance work rather than new construction installs, ensuring reliable operation of rooftop units, gas boilers, small kitchen appliances, and building automation–integrated HVAC equipment. The technician works both independently and as part of a maintenance team to keep campus facilities comfortable, safe, and energy-efficient.

Responsibilities

• Install, inspect, test, operate, and repair refrigeration systems and related equipment used for preserving food, making ice, cooling water, air conditioning, heating, and ventilation.

• Calibrate, repair, and maintain pneumatic control systems and related components to ensure accurate and reliable operation.

• Clean and maintain grills, ducts, shaftways, and other components in air conditioning, ventilating, and exhaust systems to support optimal airflow and system performance.

• Perform scheduled preventative maintenance on HVAC and refrigeration equipment, documenting all work and maintaining accurate service records.

• Respond to service calls across the campus, diagnose complex HVAC issues, and implement effective repair solutions beyond basic component replacement.

• Work closely with the maintenance team to troubleshoot and resolve facilities-related issues throughout the campus.

• Service and maintain rooftop HVAC units, ensuring safe access, proper operation, and compliance with relevant standards.

• Inspect, maintain, and repair gas boilers, identifying performance issues and implementing corrective actions where needed.

• Service small kitchen appliances related to refrigeration and heating, ensuring they operate safely and efficiently.

• Use knowledge of Building Automation Systems to understand how HVAC units are controlled, integrated, and optimized within the campus infrastructure.

• Interpret and work from blueprints, technical drawings, and equipment documentation to perform installations, repairs, and system modifications.

• Troubleshoot and diagnose issues involving switches, relays, variable volume systems, and other electrical and mechanical HVAC components.

• Collaborate with other trades on the crew as needed, while effectively managing independent tasks and responsibilities.

• Maintain a safe, organized work area and follow all applicable safety guidelines and best practices during installation, maintenance, and repair activities.

Essential Skills

• Hands-on experience with HVAC equipment installation, service, and repair, with a strong focus on service technician work rather than full construction installs.

• Proficiency in electrical troubleshooting related to HVAC systems, including switches, relays, and control components.

• Mechanical aptitude for diagnosing and repairing a variety of HVAC and refrigeration equipment beyond routine belt and motor changes.

• Experience performing preventative maintenance on HVAC systems and documenting work performed.

• Ability to troubleshoot and diagnose complex HVAC issues on rooftop units and other campus systems.

• Experience working with gas boilers, including inspection, maintenance, and repair (preferred but strongly valued).

• Capability to work on rooftop units safely and effectively, including accessing and servicing equipment located at height.

• Experience servicing small kitchen appliances related to heating and refrigeration.

• Knowledge of how Building Automation Systems interact with and control HVAC units.

• Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical documentation for HVAC installations and repairs.

• Strong troubleshooting skills for variable volume systems and related HVAC configurations.

• Competence in HVAC service work, including responding to service calls and providing timely, effective solutions.

• Valid S2 license (required).

• Ability to work autonomously and manage daily tasks independently while maintaining high standards of quality and safety.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• OSHA 10 certification is beneficial but not required.

• Experience working within an educational or campus environment is preferred.

• Comfort working as part of a multi-trade crew of approximately 15 individuals while handling primarily independent responsibilities.

• Familiarity with RFDs, variable volume systems, and related HVAC technologies.

• Strong communication skills for coordinating with the maintenance team and other trades.

• Attention to detail in recordkeeping, preventative maintenance scheduling, and documentation of service activities.

Work Environment

The HVAC Technician works on a university campus as part of a facilities crew of about 15 individuals across various trades. While there is regular interaction and occasional collaboration with other team members, most work is performed independently, with the technician managing their own service calls and preventative maintenance tasks. The position operates on a first-shift schedule, Monday through Friday, from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Work involves servicing rooftop units, gas boilers, small kitchen appliances, and HVAC systems integrated with Building Automation Systems. The environment includes both indoor and outdoor settings, mechanical rooms, rooftops, and kitchen areas, requiring appropriate work attire suitable for maintenance and technical tasks.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of West Hartford, CT.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $43.00 - $48.00/hr.
