SCHOOL NURSE

POSITION: SCHOOL NURSE

REPORTS TO: DIRECTOR OF HEALTH SERVICES, PRINCIPAL

CONTRACT PERIOD: 187/191 DAYS - 10 MONTHS

SALARY: RISD TEACHER PAY SCALE

PRIMARY PURPOSE: To strengthen and facilitate the educational process by improving and protecting the health status of children and staff. The school nurse partners with the educational team to identify and assist in the removal or modification of health-related barriers to learning. Nursing interventions decrease school absenteeism, increase the instructional time inside the classroom, and ensure students' safety through skilled professional care.

QUALIFICATIONS Education/Certification AND SPECIAL SKILLS: Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN); Current Registered Nurse License issued by the Texas Board of Nursing; Current BLS for Healthcare Providers CPR Certification

Experience: Previous experience in school, pediatric, emergency room or community health is desirable.

Special Knowledge and Skills Demonstrated expertise in pediatric/adolescent assessments.

Demonstrated proficiency in keyboarding, word processing, spreadsheets, and file maintenance.

Demonstrated organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.

Demonstrated ability to defuse problems and hostile attitudes.

Skills in time management and multitasking.

Ability to understand and communicate in Spanish is desirable.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Maintain confidentiality of health information.
• Fulfill district staff development requirements. Assume responsibility for continuing education for nursing licensure.
• Follow the policies of the district and the Health Services department.
• Communicate responsibly with all individuals and groups; seek guidance from assigned Team Leader.
• Attend area and monthly health services meetings.
• Reliable mode of personal transportation.
• Responsible for planning, management, and evaluation of acute, chronic and emergency health care problems within the school setting, including referral and follow-up.
• Assess the health and developmental status of students through performance of student evaluations and health appraisals.
• Develop, implement, and evaluate nursing care plans with specific nursing interventions and goals.
• Perform specialized nursing care procedures and administer medications in accordance with RISD guidelines.
• Thorough and timely documentation of student health information, clinic visits, and screening data according to department guidelines and procedures.
• Compile reports as indicated by department protocol.
• Coordinate school health program with instructional program.
• Management of communicable disease prevention and control measures and maintain current student immunization status.
• Provide health education within the classroom and community setting.
• Provide health related staff in-services to campus personnel.
• Perform screening procedures as required by the Texas Department of Health, TEA, and district policy.
• Collaborate with and serve as health liaison between school, physicians, parents, and community.
• Maintain clinic supplies and equipment within clinic budget.
• Communicate with director, school nurse, and team leader on matters pertaining to health concerns in the schools.
• Supervise/monitor clinic attendants and delegate nursing responsibilities to these and other unlicensed assistive personnel according to district policy and the Texas Nursing Practice Act.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
• Lifting and carrying (moderate up to 50 lbs., independently---50 or more pounds requires two people), assisting and transporting students from a wheelchair to cot to toilet and back, stooping, walking, kneeling, running, pulling, reaching, changing student clothing, diapering, and pulling students' pants up and down.
• Exposure to bacteria and other communicable diseases.
• Travel between campuses as needed.
