Departmental Overview Berkeley International Office exists to support the international students, research scholars, and employees at UC Berkeley. Position Summary As non-immigrants, international students and scholars must comply with complex federal and state regulations established by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the Department of State (DOS), the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), and the Social Security Administration. The International Student Advisor ensures that international students and scholars are familiar with these regulations and comply with them independently of and in relation to university policies and procedures. Additionally, this position ensures that the institution remains in compliance with these regulations by providing advising, producing documents, and reporting events to the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS). Responsibilities Immigration Advising Advise international students, campus staff, and faculty on procedures, policies, and regulations governing all types of non-immigrant status available to international students at the University. This information will be dispensed in person or electronically. DSO and ARO Functions Serves as a Designated School Official (DSO) and an Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) to federal programs governing the support of international students. Analyze and interpret data to produce visa documents for new and continuing students as needed. Communicates with students on pre-arrival procedures. Academic Advising Provides advice and assistance to students on academic and degree progress towards completion of study; alternative academic options, resolves scheduling conflicts, and similar issues in relation to federal regulatory requirements. Financial Aid Participates in the processing, evaluation, and awarding of student fellowships, grants, and other awards; advises students on financial aid options. Assess students' financial ability to sustain their academic objectives. Orientations and Events Conducts orientations of new international students. Advises international students and their dependents on a variety of matters related to their stay at UC-Berkeley. Coordinates and implements non-complex events that support students' educational, cultural, and social needs. Assists in the planning and implementation of complex events. Career Counseling Advises department/college/school students on employment preparation, timelines, and regulatory requirements. Organizes and presents employment-related workshops. Refers students to the campus Career Center and other campus resources. Required Qualifications Knowledge of advising and counseling techniques. Knowledge of computer application programs and pertinent databases, or comparable institutional systems. Knowledge of processes and procedures or comparable institutional knowledge. Understanding of rules and regulations or comparable institutional knowledge. Interpersonal skills. Multicultural competencies: ability to work with diverse populations; experience working or living in a cross-cultural setting. Skills in service orientation, active listening, and critical thinking. Ability in problem identification and reasoning. Ability to multitask, verbal communication, written communication, and organization. Knowledge of federal regulations as they pertain to international students and scholars. Knowledge of federal web-based systems, i.e., SEVIS. Eligibility to serve as a Designated School Official (DSO) and an Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO). Bachelor's degree in a related field and/or an equivalent combination of experience/training. Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions, including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The budgeted annual range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $83,000 - $90,000. This is an exempt, monthly-paid position.
