Quality Control Inspector — Pressure Vessel Fabrication Sho-Me Fabrication builds ASME Section VIII, Division 1 pressure vessels and stainless steel process equipment in Springfield, Missouri. We are hiring a Quality Control Inspector for our production floor. This is a hands‑on inspection job, not a desk job. You are the Quality Department’s set of eyes in the shop — verifying incoming material, checking fit‑up and welds as vessels get built, witnessing pressure testing, confirming data plates, and making sure the documentation behind every job matches what was actually built. Your day is balanced between the shop floor and the office. If you have a welding, fitting, or fabrication background and you are the person who notices when something is a quarter inch off, we will train you on the inspection procedures and the ASME documentation side. What you’ll do Receiving inspection — Verify incoming plate, heads, pipe, fittings, and weld consumables against the purchase order. Check Material Test Reports against what actually showed up, log heat numbers, and hold anything that doesn’t match before it gets to the floor. In-process fit-up and weld inspection — Inspect joint configuration, root opening, alignment, and prep before welding. Visually inspect in‑process and completed welds. Verify welders are qualified and current for the process and position, and that the correct WPS and filler metal are in use. Dimensional verification — Check shell and head dimensions, nozzle locations and projections, orientation, levelness, and squareness against the current drawing revision. Sign off traveler hold points as each operation is completed. Final inspection and pressure testing — Perform final dimensional and visual inspection, then set up and witness hydrostatic, pneumatic, and leak testing. Verify gauge calibration and range, hold time, and test pressure against the calculations and Code. Data plates — Verify nameplate content — serial number, National Board number, MAWP, MDMT, year built — against the National Board log and the Manufacturer’s Data Report before the plate goes on. Documentation — Complete inspection and test reports, maintain weld records tracing each joint to the welder, WPS, and filler metal heat, file MTRs, and assemble the Manufacturer’s Data Report package. Support the Authorized Inspector during shop visits. Nonconformances — Document them, coordinate rework with the Production Supervisor and QC Manager, and re‑inspect after correction. What you need High school diploma or GED Ability to read and interpret fabrication drawings, weld symbols, and bills of material Competent with basic inspection tools — tape, square, level, calipers, weld gauges, straightedge, depth gauge Intermediate to advanced computer skills: creating Excel logs and entries, generating and completing PDF reports, email, and learning the National Board EDT system Attention to detail, legible handwriting, and the willingness to stop a job and raise a concern when something isn’t right A good overall attitude and the willingness to communicate professionally with production, management, and the Authorized Inspector Dependable attendance and a good safety record Nice to have NDE Level I or II in VT, PT, or MT Welding, fitting, or fabrication experience, particularly stainless steel, sanitary, or pressure vessel work Familiarity with ASME Section VIII Division 1, Section IX, and B31.3 Experience with sanitary / 3‑A finish requirements and passivation Experience with Codeware COMPRESS and the National Board EDT system Physical requirements Work is balanced between the shop floor and the office, with standing and walking for a large part of the shift. Frequent bending, kneeling, reaching, and climbing ladders and platforms, plus entry into vessels for interior inspection (confined space entry per our procedure). Regularly lift and carry up to 40 lbs, occasionally up to 50 lbs with assistance. Exposure to weld fume, grinding noise, arc flash, and varying shop temperatures; required PPE at all times. Close‑vision work and color discrimination sufficient for visual weld inspection. Authority The QC Inspector has the authority to reject nonconforming material or workmanship and to stop work at any point where Code, drawing, or procedure requirements are not met. Inspection sign‑offs are personal certifications that the work was inspected and found acceptable. Schedule and compensation 1st shift, Monday through Friday, with overtime as production requires.
