Schedule: 6:45 AM – 3:15 PM

Hours: 48 hours per pay period

Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend

Employment Status: Non-Exempt

Starting pay will vary based on job-related skills, experience, and qualifications

Job Summary

Sunnyside – Harrisonburg is seeking a Staff Nurse to provide quality, professional health care for all residents of Assisted Living. The Staff Nurse is responsible for administering medications in a safe manner and within regulation requirements, responding to special needs and emergencies, and providing supervision for Medication Aides and Certified Nursing Assistants (C.N.A.s) in collaboration with the Assisted Living Director.

The Staff Nurse will promote resident-centered care while maintaining safety, dignity, confidentiality, and a hospitality approach when engaging with residents, families, guests, and coworkers.

Essential Job Duties

• Administer medications per unit dose system within regulation time frames and without error.
  
  
• Document and sign all medication administration records daily.
  
  
• Assist with Uniform Assessment Instrument (UAI) tools for each Assisted Living resident.
  
  
• Supervise Medication Aides and Certified Nursing Assistants to ensure resident-centered care is provided.
  
  
• Complete and/or supervise treatments using standard nursing protocol.
  
  
• Record nursing observations on residents’ charts; chart, date, and sign after each entry.
  
  
• Transcribe, analyze, comprehend, and implement doctors’ orders accurately and notify appropriate personnel of changes.
  
  
• Update daily flow sheets for C.N.A.s so services rendered are in agreement with the UAI.
  
  
• Report significant resident issues to the Assisted Living Director.
  
  
• Respond to and implement the fire plan for Assisted Living residents and ensure resident and staff safety.
  
  
• Maintain knowledge of the safe operation of portable oxygen tanks, concentrators, and other medical equipment.
  
  
• Practice universal precautions and ensure C.N.A.s follow universal precautions.
  
  
• Complete admissions, transfers, deaths, and discharges while maintaining accurate documentation and resident safety and security.
  
  
• Prepare change-of-shift reports and effectively communicate with oncoming staff to ensure continuity of care.
  
  
• Make rounds on each shift to account for all residents, assess the building for safety, and provide medical attention as needed.
  
  
• Handle emergencies and stressful situations with professionalism.
  
  
• Serve as the designated staff person in charge when the Assisted Living Director, Administrator, and Nursing Coordinator are away from the facility.
  
  
• Notify the appropriate administrative person on call of serious resident issues, including serious injury, hospitalization, or death.
  
  
• Draw labs as ordered and report results to the physician in a timely manner.
  
  
• Schedule resident appointments with physicians and order necessary tests as needed.
  
  
• Assess resident complaints/issues and notify the physician as needed.
  
  
• Notify responsible parties of changes in resident care in a timely manner.
  
  
• Maintain clean, organized, and orderly work areas.
  
  
• Complete dietary and maintenance forms accurately as required.
  
  
• Perform other duties as assigned.
  
  

Qualifications

• Current Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or Registered Nurse (RN) license through the Virginia Board of Nursing .
  
  
• Current CPR certification or ability to obtain.
  
  
• Ability to process information accurately, make appropriate decisions, and take appropriate action based upon available information.
  
  
• Supervisory skills required; supervisory experience preferred.
  
  
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  
  
• Ability to work with confidential information and maintain its integrity.
  
  
• Ability to multitask while maintaining attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
  
  
• Ability to work in a stressful environment and respond appropriately to medical emergency situations.
  
  
• Strong customer service skills and a hospitality approach to engaging with all individuals.

Work Environment

This position operates in a residential-style nursing environment with normal lighting levels, comfortable temperature ranges, good air quality and ventilation, and generally low noise levels.

Physical Requirements

The employee is frequently required to stand for long periods of time and routinely sit, stand, reach, lift, bend, kneel, stoop, climb, push, and pull items weighing 60 pounds or less and occasionally more than 60 pounds . The position requires manual dexterity, auditory and visual skills, and the ability to follow written and oral instructions and procedures.

Work Hazards

This position may involve contact with blood, body fluids, and other infectious drainage. Hazards are minimized when proper Universal Precautions and safety procedures are followed.
