\nPosition Summary\n
\nA shipfitter contributes to all structural phases of a ship's hull construction which may include fitting, fabricating, assembly and alignment of a ship's structure\n
\n
\nKey Responsibilities & Functional Knowledge\n
\nThis list is representative of the key areas of responsibility and functional knowledge required of a shipfitter in the Plate shop. A mechanic must demonstrate a developing knowledge of the skills, functional knowledge and abilities required to perform tasks in these and related areas of responsibility. \n
\nDeveloping knowledge means that the mechanic understands how to perform tasks in these categories (including, but not limited to, the specific tasks identified below) and is able to complete them with minimal assistance. This also means that the mechanic has the necessary level of knowledge of the equipment, protective gear, and machinery required to complete these tasks. In some cases, as specified, the third class mechanic is expected to assist, rather than completing the task independently.\n

• Burning\n

  • Complete basic cutting plate jobs
  \n
  • Possess basic knowledge of burning
  \n
  • Possess basic of using hook up torch/light torch
  \n
\n
• Make up Plating\n
  \n
  • Align and fit plates
  \n
  • Ensure strong backing for the plate
  \n
  • Ensure the edges and surfaces were prepared properly
  \n
  • Use wedge and dog to secure the alignment
  \n
  • Know the following types of plating material: steel, copper nickel, aluminum, stainless steel
  \n
\n
• Blueprint\n
  \n
  • Read, understand, and interpret basic blueprints to preform task required
  \n
\n
• Sketching\n
  \n
  • Review sketches or drawings and be able to perform layouts.
  \n
  • Tack Welding via the welding school\n
    \n
    • Begin to learn how to grind by training
    \n
    • Preferred tack welding certification
    \n
    • Preferred SMAW and FCAW or FCA certifications
    \n
  \n
  • Lay Out Access Cuts and Inserts\n
    \n
    • Read and interpret basic sketches to complete a layout
    \n
    • Perform layout (inserts/TAOs and ripouts)
    \n
    • Create temporary access cuts to take something out of a ship or facilitate another trade to get into another compartment or a tank
    \n
    • Assess finished access cutting and beveling to ensure that the layout is being executed properly
    \n
  \n
  • Tank Inspecting\n
    \n
    • Inspect a tank and document its current status
    \n
  \n
  • Assist with Testing (Tank/Rutter/Bilge Keel/Air Test Kegs/Air Test High Hats)\n
    \n
    • Basic knowledge of tank testing
    \n
    • Know the ISO procedures and policy on testing based on the ship type
    \n
    • Blank the tank and install the blanks in accordance with the ISO procedure
    \n
    • Know where to test
    \n
    • Set up a test rig
    \n
  \n
  • Foundation Alignment\n
    \n
    • Install a prefabricated foundation
    \n
    • Accurately pinpoint the installation location by reading sketches and drawings
    \n
    • Level foundation based on requirements
    \n
    • Know framing square and leveling tools
    \n
    • Set the foundation either perpendicular or parallel to the baseline
    \n
  \n
  • Portable Plasma Arc\n
    \n
    • Understand the basics of cutting ferrous and nonferrous metals
    \n
    • Basic rip out and installation
    \n
    • Know the plasma arc machine and its uses through on the job training/reading manuals
    \n
  \n
  • Other\n
    \n
    • Possess basic fabrication skills
    \n
  \n
  • Set up and perform shipfitting tasks as assigned
  \n
\n

Salary Range: The salary range for this position is $29.00 to $35.00 per hour (or $60,320 to $72,800 annually). Actual\n
\ncompensation may vary based on factors such as shift differentials or the terms outlined in an applicable Collective\n
\nBargaining Agreement (CBA), which will ultimately determine your wages.\n
\n

Required Education, Experience, & Skills \n
\nPractical Theory Requirements\n
\nA mechanic must demonstrate a developing understanding of naval vessel compartments, number systems and related vessel terminology for the CG, DDG, and LHD ships.\n

• Must be a candidate for the Maritime Solutions Norfolk Hiring Events

• Must be a graduate or current student from BAE Systems Trade School Partnership Program
\n
• Minimum education requirements: High school diploma/GED
\n
• Minimum relevant experience: 1-2yrs.
\n
• Must be able to read, write and comprehend simple instructions
\n
• Must be able to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions in written, oral or diagram form
\n
• Must be able to calculate and understand units of measure, including fractions and decimals
\n
• Must know how to measure using a scale and tape measure
\n

Must be able to wear standard PPE and use basic ship fitting tool list\n
\n

• Ultrasonic Impact Testing Treatment (UIT Treatment) - certification

• Carbon steel certification
\n
• Passing grade on breaking test
\n
• Certification in shielded metal arc welding (SMAW), also known as manual metal arc welding (MMA or MMAW), flux shielded arc welding or informally as stick welding (manual arc welding process that uses a consumable electrode covered with a flux to lay the weld)
\n
• Certification in flux-cored arc welding (FCAW or FCA) (a semi-automatic or automatic arc welding process)
\n
