Speech and Language Pathologist

Purpose School-based Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) provide prevention, assessment, and remediation services for students who exhibit difficulties in language, speech, voice, and fluency to assist students in meeting their educational goals. Supervisor Director of Student Services Minimum Qualifications NH License as a Speech-Language Pathologist Advanced degree as required by licensure (Masters or higher) and clinical experience Job-related experience within the field of communication disorders is preferred NPI # must be obtained Skills Excellent oral and written communication administer and interpret assessment instruments select and implement appropriate speech and language interventions Proficient with technology, including relevant software applications Preparing and maintaining accurate records in a timely fashion Knowledge Therapeutic procedures and practices Stages of child development/behavior normal development of communication skills principles and practices of speech and language therapy anatomy and physiology of speech and hearing mechanisms and disorders educational principles, policies, regulations and laws Program planning and development Appropriate students learning activities Abilities Adapting to changing work priorities Communicating with diverse groups and individuals Understanding detailed information and data Collaborating and working as part of a team Maintaining confidentiality Mandatory timelines and meeting deadlines creating and maintaining schedules analyzing and working with detailed information/data maintaining effective working relationships Essential Functions Adheres to the standards of professional ethics and state and federal laws and regulations to ensure that treatment/intervention plans are appropriate and effective to help children meet their educational goals Assesses students' communication skills to identify communication disorders and delays, determine eligibility, perform the functions of the job satisfactorily within mandated Special Education timelines, and develop recommendations for treatment and programming Analyzes and interprets various data from assessment techniques (formal and informal) and other sources, including classroom observations, to make recommendations regarding the need for speech and language interventions and services Develops recommendations, interventions, plans (e.g., IEPs, 504 Plans, etc.), and educational materials using evidence-based methods and techniques to assist students with their communication skills and minimize the adverse impact of their disabilities on academic and social development Consults and collaborates with school and other personnel and families to meet the needs of students, schools, and the district as it pertains to the child's educational goals Consults with professionals concerning needed assistive technology (low and high tech) to minimize the adverse educational impact of the disorder(s) and provide a means of communication for the student(s) as it pertains to the child's academic and social goals Schedules interventions using various service delivery models, including classroom intervention, consultation/collaboration, and meeting students' educational needs in the least restrictive environment Prepares and maintains various written materials to document activities, provide written reference, and convey information Interprets medical reports within the scope of speech/language pathologist's experience to provide information and ensure that IEPs/intervention plans are appropriate Makes appropriate referrals to other professionals (e.g., ENT, audiologists, physicians, counselors, etc.) to help determine communication disorders and make appropriate recommendations regarding services to cause progress on the child's educational goals Organizes and maintains a speech and language program, including scheduling and attending meetings, scheduling therapy, evaluating students, ordering testing and therapeutic materials, implementing IEPs, and keeping records to provide appropriate and effective speech and language remediation services Instructs assigned support staff and general classroom teachers to provide information on the communicative disorders, necessary classroom accommodations, modifications, interventions, and assistive communication aids Instructs eligible students, their families, and school personnel to use appropriate communication technologies and other forms of assistive communication to minimize the adverse social and educational impact of communication disorders and progress to occur on the child's academic and social goals Manages and maintains the facilities, materials, and equipment, including assistive communication equipment, when needed and appropriate, to ensure delivery of services and the availability of the communication technology called for in IEPs to address the child's educational goals Participates in various meetings, workshops, and seminars to stay current with the speech/language field, maintain licensure/certification, convey information, and provide appropriate programming to meet students' needs Researches resources, methods, and materials to determine the appropriate approach for addressing students' needs to progress on the child's educational goals Provide leadership, advocacy, and collaboration within their school buildings.
