About the Role
The Company is seeking a General Counsel and Director of Governance and Risk Management to provide strategic leadership and coordination of legal services, audit, and risk management functions. The successful candidate will also serve as the executive lead for corporate governance and as the lead for the Board of Directors' secretariat. This pivotal role involves setting and managing governance policies, overseeing legal services related to land acquisition, conservation agreements, funding and partnership agreements, and leading the delivery of internal audit, risk assessment, and risk mitigation functions. As the executive responsible for governance, the General Counsel will be at the forefront of managing key risk issues and ensuring compliance with privacy requirements at the provincial, territorial, and national levels. The ideal candidate will have a strong legal background, with experience in litigation management, legal advice, and issues management. Additionally, the role requires expertise in setting and maintaining governance policies, and the ability to provide guidance on a wide range of governance matters. While the position has the possibility of remote work, the candidate is preferred to be based in Winnipeg. The successful candidate for the General Counsel and Director of Governance and Risk Management position at the company will be a legal professional with a proven track record in leadership and a deep understanding of the legal and regulatory framework related to the organization's activities. A law degree and a license to practice law are essential, with a preference for candidates with experience in the areas of environmental law, corporate law, and governance. The role demands a strategic thinker who can proactively identify and manage legal and regulatory risks, and who has the ability to communicate complex legal issues effectively to a non-legal audience. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively with a diverse range of stakeholders are also key requirements for this position.
