Athletic Trainer - Orthopedics & Sports Medicine- (School Based)

Purpose of This Position The purpose of this job is to be an athletic trainer at a contracted school for prevention, evaluation, documentation, education, immediate care, referral and coordination of care of athletic injuries under the direction of the team physician or by written referral from a physician, and in accordance with the State of Ohio athletic training practice act. Be a positive community representative of school and Blanchard Valley Health System. Job Duties / Responsibilities Provide athletic training services during practices, games and events as determined in collaboration with athletic trainer and athletic director. Assess, evaluate, manage, treat, rehabilitate and recondition athletic injuries under the direction of team physician or referring provider. Maintain accurate records of injuries, treatments and forms that may include final forms, Sway/Impact testing. Maintain communication with the patient, family, team physician, referring provider, coaches, and administration concerning progress, problems, home programs, and other issues related to the therapeutic process. Help in preparing orders, maintaining and cleaning equipment and inventorying supplies in conjunction with school with attention to budget. Practice safety, environmental, and/or infection control methods. Oversee athletic training aides and graduate students, as delegated. Perform miscellaneous job‑related duties as assigned. Continue professional growth by attending educational meetings, workshops, visiting related facilities, and professional literature to ensure compliance with national regulating athletic training boards, and state licensure requirements. Represent school and BVHS in a positive manner at the school, event or within the community. Complete all requirements needed to work with students at the school. This may include online training sessions required by Ohio Revised Code. Operate at all times within the scope of the general and specific educational philosophy of the school and BVHS. Obtain approval for vacation, illness or other time off in conjunction with school, athletic trainer and Blanchard Valley Orthopedics Manager. Travel with athletic teams as decided upon in conjunction with school athletic director/athletic trainer. Attend home games/meets as decided upon in conjunction with school athletic director/athletic trainer for boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer, hockey, wrestling, freshman and junior varsity football, baseball, softball, and track. Required Qualifications Licensed as an Athletic Trainer by the Ohio OTPTAT Board. Certified by the Board of Certification for the Athletic Trainer. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. A valid driver’s license is required (if you do not have a valid Ohio driver’s license you must obtain one within 30 days of your residency in the state). You must also meet BVHS's company fleet policy and insurance company requirements, and any other requirements that may be required to operate a vehicle. Positive service‑oriented interpersonal and communication skills required. Individual must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patient served on his/her assigned unit/department. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient status. Must be able to interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to their age‑specific needs and to provide the care needed as described in the area’s policies and procedures. Physical Demands General Frequent standing and changes of body position from sit‑stand to stand‑sit to treat athletes, assist athletes in training room, on game or practice field, during documentation, and general training room activities. Frequent changes of body position from kneeling to sitting or kneeling to standing, to assess athletes at practice or game venues. Frequent demonstration of proper use of all equipment. Occasionally provides steadying or assistance to athletes in training room, on game or practice field, while standing or walking. Occasionally lifts/adjusts athletes positioned on tables, ground, or spine boards. Fine Motor Coordination Frequent use of computer or writing to document patient care/treatment. Frequent use of fine motor skills during evaluation and treatment (e.g., resistance exercises, palpation of muscle function, deep muscle massage, or goniometric measurements to assess patient function). Verbal Expression Frequent presentation of treatment verbally for evaluation and treatment tasks. Presentation of information verbally to other professionals in formal and informal meetings, and in telephone consultations. Hearing Reliance on hearing to discern speech and voice impairments, and to determine adequacy of spoken language and cognitive responses during evaluation and treatment activities. Hearing also involved in receiving verbal information from others. Vision Frequent visual observation of patient to assess movements, adequacy of gestures. Frequent reading of reports and other written materials from others or on a computer. Environmental Factors The practice of athletic training involves occasional risk of infection (e.g., MRSA, hepatitis, other blood‑borne pathogens) which requires the use of safety precautions such as surgical masks, gowns, gloves and special hand‑washing procedures. Materials and treatment surfaces may also require special handling. The position may work indoors or outdoors during inclement weather that may include hot, cold, rain, snow or sleet.
