Job Description

The Mechanic is responsible for maintaining, repairing, and ensuring the operational readiness of a diverse fleet that includes company vehicles, traffic control equipment, trailers, sanitation equipment, and other operational assets. This role performs routine inspections, preventive maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs to keep all equipment safe, reliable, and available for field operations across multiple service lines. The Mechanic works independently, prioritizes repairs effectively, responds quickly to operational needs, and is able to mobilize to other offices or job sites as required, while consistently focusing on safety and efficiency.

Responsibilities

• Inspect, diagnose, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain company vehicles, trailers, equipment, and machinery.
• Perform routine preventive maintenance, including oil changes, fluid checks, lubrication, filter replacements, and scheduled service intervals.
• Identify mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and engine-related issues and complete necessary repairs in a timely manner.
• Conduct equipment and vehicle inspections to ensure safe operating conditions and compliance with company standards.
• Maintain accurate records of repairs, maintenance activities, inspections, parts usage, and service schedules.
• Coordinate with supervisors and operations personnel to prioritize repairs and minimize equipment downtime.
• Repair and maintain traffic control equipment, sanitation equipment, trailers, and other operational assets as assigned.
• Order, track, and maintain inventory of parts, tools, supplies, and shop equipment.
• Respond to breakdowns and equipment failures, including performing field service calls when necessary.
• Ensure all work is completed in accordance with company safety policies and applicable regulations.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe shop and work environment.
• Operate company vehicles and equipment in a safe and responsible manner.
• Assist with equipment setup, inspections, and operational readiness for field crews.
• Communicate maintenance needs, repair recommendations, and equipment status updates to management.
• Perform other duties as assigned to support operational needs.

Essential Skills

• Minimum of 5 years of equipment maintenance experience.
• 25 years of diesel equipment and maintenance experience.
• Strong troubleshooting skills for mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and engine-related systems.
• Hands-on experience with equipment maintenance for trucks and trailers, pump trucks, heavy equipment, and industrial equipment.
• Demonstrated diesel equipment repair and maintenance experience.
• Proficiency in preventive maintenance practices, including scheduled service intervals.
• Experience with hydraulic and pneumatic systems, including diagnosis and repair.
• Ability to perform mechanical repairs on brakes and other critical vehicle components.
• Basic welding experience for equipment repair and fabrication as needed.
• Valid drivers license.
• Ability to perform physical work, including lifting up to 50 pounds.
• Experience operating large non-CDL trucks in the 20'24' range.
• Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and respond quickly to operational needs.
• Strong commitment to safety and adherence to company policies and applicable regulations.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience working with heavy equipment and industrial equipment in both shop and field environments.
• Familiarity with traffic control equipment and sanitation equipment maintenance.
• Ability to maintain organized records of maintenance activities, inspections, and parts usage.
• Experience coordinating repair priorities with operations teams to reduce equipment downtime.
• Comfort with occasional on-call rotation to support urgent service needs.
• Strong communication skills to clearly report maintenance needs, repair recommendations, and equipment status.
• Ability to mobilize to other company offices or job sites as required.

Work Environment

This role operates in a combination of shop and field service environments, primarily based in a mechanic shop in Hampton, VA, with regular travel to respond to service calls as needed. The typical shift runs from 7:00am - 3:30pm, Monday - Friday. Work involves hands-on maintenance and repair of trucks, trailers, pump trucks, heavy equipment, industrial equipment, traffic control equipment, and sanitation equipment, often using tools and equipment suited to mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and welding tasks.

This is a Permanent position based out of Hampton, VA.

The pay range for this position is $49920.00 - $83200.00/yr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
