Executive Underwriter or AVP, Underwriting Director - Construction Casualty (New York)

Zurich is currently seeking an Executive Underwriter or AVP, Underwriting Director – Construction Casualty to join our team in Boston, MA or New York, NY. This position will be based out of Boston or New York, with flexible hybrid work. You will partner with your manager to set a schedule that supports customers, brokers, and agents. The role requires visibility in the marketplace, meeting with agents and brokers, and being in the office/market three days per week.

As a Construction Casualty Underwriter, you will handle complex new and renewal accounts across Auto, GL, and Workers’ Compensation, and potentially large project/wrap‑up insurance programs. You will fully apply and hone your underwriting and marketing skills while building relationships with our Preferred Distribution Partners in the Northeast. Candidates with construction casualty experience are preferred, but we consider senior underwriters who wish to expand into construction risk management.

The Construction Casualty Underwriter is responsible for:

  • Serving as a customer industry advocate focused on improving the customer experience by understanding their risk and offering the best end‑to‑end solution.
  • Using a disciplined approach to exposure evaluation, risk assessment, and pricing.
  • Using risk insights, data, and models to drive informed decisions at point of sale.
  • Market‑facing and production within the growing Construction division.
  • Administering and monitoring underwriting rules and guidelines, insurance laws and regulations, and rating manual rules.
  • Working within broad limits and authority on complex assignments.

This role will be filled at either the Executive Underwriter or AVP, Underwriting Director – Construction Casualty level. The hiring manager will determine the appropriate level based on the selected applicant’s experience and skill set relative to the qualifications listed below.

Executive Underwriter – Construction Casualty Basic Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent with 5+ years in Underwriting or Market Facing.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent with 10+ years in Claims or Underwriting Support.
  • Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice with an Associate Degree and 3+ years in Underwriting or Market Facing.
  • Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice with an Associate Degree and 8+ years in Claims or Underwriting Support.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office.

AVP, Underwriting Director – Construction Casualty Basic Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent with 7+ years in Underwriting, Market Facing, Banking, Mortgage, Finance, or Construction.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent with 14+ years in Claims or Underwriting Support.
  • Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice with an Associate Degree and 5+ years in Underwriting, Market Facing, Banking, Mortgage, Finance, or Construction.
  • Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice with an Associate Degree and 12+ years in Claims or Underwriting Support.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree.
  • Advanced knowledge and practice of lines of business.
  • Strong knowledge of underwriting philosophy, techniques, national and local filing regulations and guidelines.
  • Ability to assess risk effectively.
  • Ability to work in a team‑based environment.

Your pay at Zurich is based on your role, location, skills, and experience. We follow local laws to ensure fair compensation. You may also be eligible for bonuses and merit increases. The combined salary range for this position is $100,000.00 – $215,000.00. The proposed salary range for the Executive Underwriter is $100,000.00 – $165,000.00, with Global Specialty Incentive Plan bonus eligibility set at 30%. The proposed salary range for the AVP, Underwriting Director is $130,000.00 – $215,000.00, with Global Specialty Incentive Plan bonus eligibility set at 40%.
