FAMILY INVESTMENT SPECIALIST I (STATEWIDE)

Job Summary A Family Investment Specialist I is an entry‑level role that provides direct services to individual customers or families, determining eligibility for Family Investment Administration programs, interviewing customers, completing documentation, and monitoring progress. Employees do not supervise others. Location Statewide Responsibilities Interview applicants for Public Assistance, Medical Assistance, and/or Food Stamps to determine eligibility. Explain program requirements and procedures to customers individually or in groups. Collect and calculate incomes and resources to establish benefit levels. Determine program eligibility in accordance with federal, state, and local laws, policies, and regulations. Check public records and contact individuals, employers, landlords, attorneys, financial institutions, medical offices, and community agencies to verify required information. Maintain case records using digital database systems. Contact customers regarding discrepancies and refer questionable cases to the fraud unit. Monitor case progress and apply sanctions when necessary. Provide information and make referrals to service agencies and vendors for health, housing, food, employment assistance, child care, and transportation needs. Advocate for customers and provide basic counseling and problem‑solving support. Make home visits to gather information, prepare appeal packages, and testify in administrative appeals hearings, as required. Perform other related duties. Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent. Six months of public contact experience that includes interviewing, explaining information, gathering data, analyzing data, writing correspondence, and completing mathematical or legal tasks. OR six months of general office, retail, food service, construction trade, or similar experience involving data entry, record filing, phone handling, and computer skills. OR six months of U.S. Armed Forces experience. Licenses and Certifications Assignment may require operation of a motor vehicle; a valid Maryland motor‑vehicle operator’s license is required. Benefits Health, dental, and vision insurance at low cost. Personal leave: six personnel days per year, prorated. Annual leave: ten days per year. Sick leave: fifteen days per year. Parental leave: up to sixty days paid. Holidays: at least twelve per year. Pension: credits toward state retirement pension. Telework may be available.
