Associate Planner

Associate Planner Interviews will take place on an ongoing basis. The starting salary for this position will be based on the candidate’s qualifications at time of appointment. Future salary increases include a 3.87% increase effective June 2027 (3% across-the-board + 0.87% market adjustment). Calling all dynamic and passionate professionals! The County of San Diego Planning & Development Services (PDS) is actively seeking enthusiastic and dedicated individuals to join their team as Associate Planners. This role will engage in a wide array of projects and leadership roles that involve conducting cutting‑edge planning and environmental studies. Responsibilities Perform a wide scope of environmental and/or planning projects with moderate public controversy and complexity, including major use permits, variances, and environmental impact reports (EIRs). Make recommendations for rezones, Countywide policy and ordinance changes, and updates to the General Plan. Present findings and recommendations to decision‑making bodies such as the Board of Supervisors. Collaborate with public, management, stakeholders, and consultants throughout the planning process. Develop and present graphic displays and public outreach materials. Ideal Candidate Profile Professional level experience as a land use or environmental planner, including updating General Plans, community plans, ordinances, and climate action plans, and preparing CEQA/NEPA documents. Strong analytical skills and a solution‑oriented approach to land use and environmental planning issues. Experience facilitating consensus and engaging in public meetings. Ability to prepare graphic displays and outreach materials. Willingness to continually learn and grow professionally. Professional perspective, objective demeanor, and flexibility in positive or difficult situations. Effective verbal and written communication skills, strong presentation skills, and active listening. Good interpersonal and teamwork skills, building relationships to keep projects moving forward. Commitment to diversity, inclusiveness, and understanding multiple perspectives. Minimum Qualifications A bachelor’s degree in city and regional planning, urban planning, or related science, and two (2) years of progressively responsible professional level experience at the level of an Assistant Planner (Land Use/Environmental Planner I). OR a master’s degree in one of the listed fields and one (1) year of such experience. One (1) year of experience as an Assistant Planner (Land Use/Environmental Planner I) with the County of San Diego. Professional level land use/environmental planning experience in a public or private agency may substitute for education on a year-for-year basis, up to two (2) years of the education requirement. Work Location & Schedule PDS is located within the LEED‑Certified County Operations Center in Kearny Mesa, San Diego, with hybrid schedule options including teleworking and on‑site work at the County Operations Center.
