The unit has 63 beds, including 49 private and 9 observation beds. The nurse-to-patient ratios are 4-5 patients per RN during the day and 5-6 patients per RN during the night. Common diagnoses include post-operative surgical cases, trauma, overflow medical patients, and wound care. Nurses will perform dressing changes, IV therapy, pain management, and care for drains and NG tubes. Critical thinking skills are paramount, and nurses are encouraged to seek assistance when needed. There will be Charge Nurses and House Supervisors on each shift, with Charge Nurses not taking patient assignments. Patient Care Technicians are present to assist nurses, with ratios varying between shifts. RNs do not manage ventilators but will handle CPAP and high-flow needs as directed. Telemetry monitoring is available, but bedside RNs do not read strips; this is managed at a central station. Nurses will be required to work every other weekend and rotate holidays. Travelers will be the first to float, if necessary, to units with the same level of care. Any color scrubs may be worn. Orientation will include working with a preceptor and professional training.
