Job Description
ICU Registered Nurse (RN)

General Information

This unit is a mixed acuity unit that accommodates both intermediate care and non-ventilated ICU level patients. The unit consists of 18 beds.

Qualifications

• Minimum of 1 year of ICU experience required.
• First-time travelers accepted with a minimum of 2 years of ICU experience.
• Required licenses and certifications: ACLS, BLS, NIHSS.

Patient Types & Common Diagnoses

• Neurological and post-procedural patients, including but not limited to:
  
  
  • Post thrombolytic therapy (TNK)
  • Neuro interventional procedures (embolisms, angiography)
  • Hemorrhages and aneurysms
  • Burr holes
  • Post VP shunt placements
  • Post craniotomy/craniectomy
  • Lumbar drains
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Non-ventilated neurological patients, including EVDs
  • Continuous EEG monitoring
  • Neurosurgery and spine surgery patients
• Patients with respiratory failure, CHF, hypotension, sepsis, altered mental status (AMS), acute neurological diagnosis, DKA, and electrolyte abnormalities.

Patient Ratios

• Registered Nurse (RN) to patient ratio: 1:3, based on acuity.
• Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) to patient ratio: 1:12.

Essential Skills

• Experience managing patients on BiPAP/CPAP.
• Proficiency in cardiac rhythm interpretation.
• Experience with central venous pressure (CVP) monitoring and hemodynamic line management.
• Knowledge of post-surgical drains, tracheostomies, and chest tubes.
• Experience with titratable drips, including but not limited to Cardizem, Dobutamine, Dopamine, Esmolol, Insulin, Cardene, Nitro, Levophed, and Epinephrine.

Support within the Department

• CNA assistance with patient baths, meals, linen changes, blood sugar checks, temperature checks, patient toileting, and hourly rounding.
• Receptionists handle call lights, phone inquiries, and assist in patient transportation.
• Available resources include:
  
  
  • Charge nurse
  • Phlebotomy services
  • IV/Vascular Access Team
  • Rapid Response Team
  • Resource Nurse (dedicated educator and mentor)
  • Respiratory Therapists available 24/7
  • Hospitalists and Intensivists available 24/7
• Telemetry monitoring techs - RNs are required to read and interpret telemetry strips.

Technology & Equipment

• Electronic Medical Records (EMR): Cerner.
• IV Pump: Plum 360.
• Medication dispensing: Omnicell.
• Monitors: Spacelabs and Respira.
• Unit-specific equipment includes bedside monitors and bladder scanners.

Floating Policy

Floating may occur to similar units or patient locations (e.g., MS-MS, MS-ICU, or MS-ER holds; ICU-ICU, ICU-MS). Limit on floating to 3 units may apply.

Orientation

Travelers new to the facility or returning after more than 1 year will receive 24 hours of classroom training, followed by 24 hours on the unit. Rehires may have orientation requirements adjusted based on their previous tenure.

Scheduling

• Weekend rotation: Every other weekend, with the potential for back-to-back
